Canon Color imageClass LBP7660cdn

The Canon Color imageClass LBP7660cdn ($500 street), a workhorse color laser printer for a small office or workgroup, provides typical speed, a solid feature set, and above-average output for a printer at its price. It?s a very respectable choice, although its running costs are on the high side.

The LBP7660cdn, white with an off-black top, is box-shaped with a curved front edge. It measures 13.6 by 16.3 by 19.7 inches (HWD), bigger than you?d want to share a desk with, and weighs 49 pounds. It has a standard paper capacity of 300 sheets, split between a 250-sheet main tray and a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray; it has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. If you need more capacity, an additional 250-sheet tray is available ($199 direct).

In addition to Canon?s host-based UFR II driver, the LBP7660cdn comes with both PCL and PostScript drivers.

The LBP7660cdn can connect to a computer via USB or to a LAN by Ethernet. I tested it over a USB connection with a computer running Windows Vista.

Speed and Output Quality

Our standard procedure for testing business printing speed is to test using the printer?s default settings. Canon is one of the few printer manufacturers that makes duplexing (double-sided printing) the default on most of its recent printers. Thus, we tested the LBP7660cdn in duplex mode, which tends to be slightly slower than simplex (one-sided) printing.?

I timed the LBP7660cdn on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 5.1 pages per minute (ppm), a typical speed for a color laser at its price and in line with its 20-ppm rating (for both color and monochrome) that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos. It slightly lagged the Editors? Choice

Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct, 4 stars), and was slightly faster than the Editors? Choice ?Xerox Phaser 6280dn ($649 direct, 4 stars), which came in at 4.5 ppm. Both the Dell and Xerox were tested in simplex mode.

Output was very good, with text typical of color lasers and photos and graphics both slightly above par. Text quality was good enough for most all internal business uses, though not up to demanding desktop publishing standards.

With graphics, the colors were well saturated. Minor issues included dithering (the tendency for solid areas to break up into fine graininess) and banding (a regular pattern of thin lines of discoloration). In one graph depicting very thin colored lines, the lines were barely visible. Graphics were good enough for internal business use up to and including PowerPoint handouts, though I?d hesitate to use them for documents meant to try to impress an important client.

Photos were slightly above par for a color laser. I noticed some mild blue tinting in a couple of images, and there was occasional loss of finer detail. Photos were good enough to use for marketing materials such as real estate handouts.

Other Issues

Running costs for the LBP7660cdn are 3.9 cents per black-and-white page and 17.2 cents per color page, both high for a color laser. The Dell 2150cdn?s cost per page is 2.4 cents per black-and-white page and 14.3 per color page. The Xerox Phaser 6280dn?s running costs are 3.1 cents per monochrome page, 15.8 cents per color.

The Canon Color imageClass LBP7660cdn provides good output quality as a workhorse color laser printer for a small office. It has very similar specs to the Editors? Choice Dell 2150cdn, identical monthly duty cycles (40,000 pages per month) and slightly higher paper capacity (300 sheets, to 251 for the Dell). They?re comparable in speed and output quality. ?The Dell, however, not only costs $100 less, it has substantially lower running costs. You save $15 per 1,000 black pages and nearly that in color pages compared with the LBP7660cdn?s toner costs.

The Xerox Phaser 6280dn also offers lower running costs than the Canon. As it?s nearing its end of life, it can be bought for a little over $300 from many e-tailers. It offers greater paper capacity (400 sheets) and a more robust duty cycle, while providing high-quality output, especially for text and graphics. That said, the LBP7660cdn is a very solid printer with good-quality output, and worthy of being on the short list of anyone shopping for a color laser printer to anchor a small office.

Better prognosis for breast cancer in Germany

How successful is the interdisciplinary treatment of breast cancer? Since 2003, the Breast Center at Heidelberg University Hospital has systematically tracked the course of breast cancer in more than 3,000 patients and, as the first center in Germany, has published these significant prospective results: Eighty-six percent of the patients survived the first five years after onset of treatment, with 80 % of them remaining disease-free during this period. The evaluation was published online in February 2012 in the journal The Breast.

"The prognosis for breast cancer has further improved thanks to new treatment options and consistent interdisciplinary treatment," said Prof. Christof Sohn, Managing Director of the Heidelberg University Women's Hospital and Director of the Breast Center. This is proven by the results of treatment in Heidelberg. An evaluation of the German cancer registry for the period from 2000 to 2004 conducted by Robert Koch Institute in 2010 yielded a probability of 79.6 % for disease-free survival in the first five years after treatment. A current study by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) that analyzed the data of 11 German cancer registries from the period from 2002 to 2006 yielded a probability of approx. 84 %. In the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute, this probability was 89 % for the period from 1999 to 2006.

Eighty-six percent of the patients were still alive five years after treatment

The interdisciplinary team in Heidelberg headed by Prof. Andreas Schneeweiss, head of the section of Gynecological Oncology at the National Center for Tumor Diseases and the Heidelberg University Hospital Women's Hospital and by Dr. J?rg Heil, head physician and coordinator of the Heidelberg University Hospital Breast Center, evaluated the data of all 3,338 patients newly diagnosed with malignant breast cancer treated at Heidelberg University Hospital's Breast Center from 2003 to 2010. Five years after initial treatment, 80 % were disease-free, i.e., the cancer had not recurred. In 15 % of the patients, a tumor had recurred in the breast and in 19 %, metastases had occurred, with some patients experiencing both. Eighty-six percent of the patients survived the first five years after initial diagnosis. Taking the deaths into account that were not attributed to the breast cancer, the evaluation showed that only 10 % of the patients died from breast cancer during the first five years after diagnosis.

Interdisciplinary tumor board provides recommendations for treatment

"Our results serve as a basis for further improving preventative care and treatment of breast cancer patients," said Prof. Schneeweiss. "In this area, with the structures created at the National Center for Tumor Diseases in Heidelberg, we are setting the standards for other centers in Germany." Since 2003, Prof. Schneeweiss has managed the meticulous documentation of all breast cancer cases, which now constitutes the data base for this and other such analyses and will continue to do so in the future. Prof. Schneeweiss is also the head of the interdisciplinary tumor board and is therefore responsible for drawing up the individual interdisciplinary treatment recommendations.

In 2003, the Breast Center at Heidelberg University Women's Hospital was one of the first centers in Germany to be certified by the German Cancer Society and the German Society for Senology. Today, there are more than 200 certified breast centers in Germany. In 2006, the Breast Center was accredited by the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA). For patients, this means that an experienced team of physicians and modern treatment options ensure high-quality diagnostics and treatment through multidisciplinary cooperation. In 2011, Heidelberg University Hospital's Breast Center treated over 600 newly diagnosed patients, making it one of Germany's largest breast centers.

IDC crowns Samsung the biggest phone maker by shipments for Q1 2012

Image

Research firm IDC is reporting that Nokia has been dethroned as the world's biggest phone maker by Samsung. In the first quarter of the year, Samsung shipped 98.3 million mobile phones, with Nokia and Apple in second and third place. In the smartphone-only charts, the Korean company shipped 42.2 million of its Android and Windows Phone handsets, while Cupertino shipped 35.1 million and Nokia shipped a paltry-by-comparison 11.9 million.

Samsung, Apple and companies outside the top 5 all made big gains in the smartphone space, while Nokia, RIM and HTC all felt their numbers drop. Unsurprisingly, companies with big stakes in dumb phones suffered, with Nokia and LG losing big chunks of their market share to the big two and stalking horse ZTE, which has bested LG for fourth place. After the break, we've got the official tallies that you can pore over.

Free Business Templates | PaySimple Blog

One of the hardest things small business people need to do is create from a blank slate. If you?ve started your own business, then you?re probably pretty good at it. But, you?re also probably smart enough to know that you don?t need to reinvent the wheel. And when it comes to standard business documents, starting from a template is typically a great shortcut, provided you do enough customization to turn the template into a document that meets your exact business needs.

There are many websites offering templates for everything from business letters to video themes, and the content is of varying quality so it can be hard to know where to go first. A good place to start is the Template Gallery for Google Docs. (Yes, it is Google?s way of getting you to use its Docs suite, but you don?t need to use Docs to use the templates, as after they open in Docs they can be downloaded in a form compatible with your desktop software.)

There are 15 template categories including Business, Presentations, Calculators and Legal. You can filter each by type of document ? spreadsheet, document, presentation, form and drawing. You should also use the language filter to narrow the results for your language (i.e. US English). Within any set of category filters, you can also use a keyword search to get to the exact type of template you need (i.e. cash flow statement). The filtered results can be sorted by star rating, most used, and ?hottest.?

The Template Gallery is a collaborative environment to which anyone with a Google Account can post?so the content is uneven, and may contain sales pitches or links from a company trying to sell you something. However if you can ignore the noise, and know the type of document you?re looking for, you?re likely to find a template that will meet your needs.

So the next time you?re tempted to start a spreadsheet, form or presentation from scratch, check out the Template Gallery on Google Docs first.

Man City nears Premier title

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -With one thumping header, Vincent Kompany may well have tilted the balance of football power in Manchester from red to blue.

Kompany's goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to give Manchester City a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday and put his team in position to secure a first Premier League title in 44 years.

In what had been billed as the biggest Manchester derby ever, the City captain provided one of the game's few memorable moments - aside from a touchline dustup between Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini - when he rose above Manchester United defender Chris Smalling to meet David Silva's in-swinging corner and send his header past goalkeeper David de Gea.

It was the simplest of winning goals and came after a brief lapse of concentration from the United defense, but it could have long-lasting repercussions in Manchester - and English football in general.

A Premier League title that looked to be firmly in United's grasp just two weeks ago is now again City's to lose. City leads its crosstown rival on goal difference with just two rounds remaining, having trailed by eight points earlier this month.

After spending decades in the shadows of its more successful neighbor, City's newfound wealth under Abu Dhabi ownership may finally be on the verge of producing the result that fans have been longing for.

"Absolutely buzzing. ... We've been waiting for this moment," Kompany said. "It's far from over, and we know that, but just to give our fans two wins over Manchester United this season - we have to finish it off."

City and United have been going toe-to-toe atop the league table all season, a struggle that culminated in Ferguson and Mancini going face to face during Monday's game.

As the clock started running out on United's attempts at a fightback, Ferguson became incensed by City midfielder Nigel De Jong's clumsy tackle on Danny Welbeck, and ended up in a shouting match with Mancini on the touchline.

With both managers making hand gestures to suggest that the other should stop talking, Ferguson eventually had to be dragged back to his own technical area, while City's assistant coach David Platt restrained Mancini.

"He was badgering the referee the whole game, the fourth official and the linesman," Ferguson said. "The minute I go out there, he started again."

Like his team, however, Mancini didn't give an inch. Faced by Ferguson's famous "hairdryer" - the name given to the blast received when Ferguson starts shouting - the City manager gave as good as he got.

The two did shake hands after the game, and Mancini shrugged off the confrontation when told of Ferguson's complaint.

"Him, no? He doesn't talk with the referee and the fourth official? Never?" the Italian said with a smile.

Back on the pitch, City's players didn't just match United, they outclassed the defending champion - although this was a game where the entertainment level was not nearly as high as the stakes.

United failed to get a shot on target during the entire match, while City could have scored more - Samir Nasri being the worst offender when he dallied to long in front of goal in the 90th.

Ferguson's ploy of fielding an extra man in midfield failed to pay off, with Park Ji-sung given a surprise role in midfield but looking rusty after starting a first league match since January.

In contrast, Mancini kept faith with the attack-minded lineup that had yielded three straight wins with 12 goals scored.

Sergio Aguero - watched from an executive box by his father-in-law Diego Maradona - had the best early chance, volleying wide from an angle in the 25th.

But Maradona and the rest of the City fans had to wait until the stroke of halftime for the decisive breakthrough, as Kompany headed City in front.

That goal ensured that the teams went in for halftime with the home fans waving their blue-and-white flags above their heads in jubilation.

City has now won all but one home match this season, drawing the other, and has an advantage of eight over United in the goal difference column.

"I think that we deserved to win this game, we scored, we played well and we had other chances to score in the second half," Mancini said.

The win also means City has completed a famous double over United, this crucial home victory backing up a stunning 6-1 win at Old Trafford last October.

"We had control of some parts of the game but not enough to cause any damage," Ferguson said.

City still has a tough job to seal a first title since 1968. The team next visits fifth-place Newcastle United and then hosts relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers in the remaining fixtures, while United finishes against Swansea at home and Sunderland away.

But City's fans - including Maradona - went home very satisfied indeed.

"We are happy, but I think that next Sunday we will have another difficult game (against Newcastle). Very difficult," Mancini said.
