Tripp Roth Loses Epidermolysis Bullosa Battle (ContributorNetwork)

Tripp Roth, a Pontchatoula, La., toddler who had junctional epidermolysis bullosa, died Saturday, ABC News reported. Here are details for parents dealing with this illness, dubbed "the worst disease you didn't know about."

* Epidermolysis bullosa is one of a family of inherited skin disorders in which the skin blisters in response to minor injury, says the National Library of Medicine. Varieties of the condition can range from mild to severe and deadly. Mild cases may not be caught until adulthood, but most forms are identified at birth or in childhood. Some types are linked to Crohn's Disease (an inflammatory bowel disorder) and autoimmune problems.

* According to Tripp's mother Courtney Roth, who wrote about her son's illness in her blog "EB"ing a Mommy, doctors said her son was diagnosed with epidermolysis bullosa when they noticed a lesion on his face and several blackened fingernails. Roth gives advice for other parents on her blog.

* Roth says children with EB can get blisters anywhere on the body but mostly on the face, eyelids, mucus membranes, esophagus, genital and rectal area. Some children's eyelids fuse shut from lack of skin-repair proteins and repeated scarring. Scarring will also cause skin on fingers and toes to fuse together, making movement difficult, says NLM. As the disease progresses, a feeding tube might be inserted because feeding by mouth is too painful. Throat and mouth lesions make speech challenging.

* Tripp died at two years and eight months. That's almost two years longer than most doctors give children with severe junctional EB. The disease degenerates quickly because the skin becomes so thin. In time, only the slightest pressure is needed for a blister to form.

* There is no known cure for EB, but the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association says genetic research is showing some promise for gene transfer, stem cell use and protein therapy. Clinical Trials is exploring Alwextin cream for relief of blister pain. Current treatment involves symptom care and preventative measures to reduce infection.

* Parents with a family history epidermolysis bullosa may want to explore genetic testing and counseling to explore the possibility of transmission to children, says NLM.

* NLM lists several recommendations for parents caring for a child with EB. Bandaging the skin and using topical ointments can prevent infection and further blistering. Good nutrition is essential as blisters prevent children from eating comfortably. Soft foods are recommended and temporary use of oral steroids can help children swallow more comfortably. Physical therapy, particularly aqua therapy, can help soothe lesions and help children with mobility issues from scar-damaged tissue. DEBRA says parents should be mindful of good oral care, as children's teeth are often affected by the disease, too.

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben writes about parenting from 23 years raising four children and 25 years teaching K-8, special needs, adult education and home-school.

iNdustrial Revolutions

bejing-airTo paraphrase Otto von Bismarck, "iPads are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made." It's an ugly story. Over a hundred employees "injured by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause nerve damage and paralysis" because its use "meant workers could clean more screens each minute." Other workers killed or injured by explosions. All so that iPads can be built as cheaply as possible, so that Apple can maintain its 44.7% gross margins. Isn't that awful? Yes, of course -- but let's try to maintain a nuanced perspective here. This is hardly a new story, and it's hardly unique to the tech industry. Think of the exploitation of child labor to harvest Egyptian cotton and Cote d'Ivoire cocoa. Plus ?a change; a decade ago it was Indonesian sweatshops and Indian fireworks exciting outrage. Think of the exploitation of Congolese workers to mine coltan, used in electronics everywhere. Show me a country with a large population of desperately poor people, and I'll show you horrific exploitation of impoverished workers. Please note, though, that the latter is an inevitable symptom of the former; and again, let's please try to maintain a sense of perspective. It's awful that a dozen Chinese workers were killed and hundreds injured building iPads--but at the same time, coal mining kills more than two thousand Chinese workers a year (down from almost 7000 ten years ago) and nobody's suddenly outraged about them. We in the West don't really seem to care that Chinese employees work under awful conditions and die in appalling numbers -- unless they make shiny things that we use. We claim we don't want people to suffer, but in fact we just don't want our iProducts tainted by that suffering. Isn't that more than a little hypocritical?

HTC Titan II works its charm on the FCC with AT&T LTE included
What's that? An HTC PI86100 Windows Phone with AT&T-specific LTE (bands 4 and 17) showing up in the hallowed halls of the FCC? Why, this must be the Titan II, announced a tad over a fortnight ago. Docs show that a production unit of the device, sporting the aforementioned LTE bands as well as 850 / 1900 3G (also AT&T compatible), is ready to take on its new Windows Phone competition sometime soon. Is it a guarantee that the phone is nigh at hand? Not quite, but at least it signifies that the 16 megapixel beast is one step closer to showing up in our hands.

Demi Moore Lucks Out On 911 Tape

Demi Moore could get seriously lucky just before the release of the 911 call that was made before she was taken to the hospital earlier this week. First of all, I want to clear that I am not making light of her ended up in the hospital. I am also not making fun of her if she has a real substance abuse problem. With that said, what the heck is going on? Usually the dirty and even disturbing details are aired out when celebrities find themselves in these kind of situations. Instead, word has it that the tape of the 911 call will be edited so that it doesn?t include specific references to the drugs that were allegedly involved or even the friends that were involved. So what exactly will be on the tape now anyway? I think it might go something like this ?okay, so we have a woman here who has collapsed. Help, please.? How silly is that? In case you didn?t know, sources have claimed that she was doing nitrous oxide right before she had a near seizure. That is just plain embarrassing. Those aren?t even really illegal anyway, but there is some kind of loophole that [...]

Boeing 4Q profit up as plane deliveries take off (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS ? Quicker deliveries of Boeing's commercial airplanes helped it report a 20-percent jump in fourth-quarter profits, and offset sluggish growth in its defense business.

However, its shares fell because of a weaker 2012 earnings outlook than analysts expected.

Boeing Co. posted net income of $1.39 billion Wednesday, or $1.84 per share. That didn't include a tax benefit of 52 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1 per share. Revenue was $19.56 billion, also better than expected.

Boeing delivered 128 commercial planes during the quarter, up from 116 a year ago. Profits from commercial planes jumped 56 percent. Revenue rose 31 percent.

Profits from defense rose 6 percent. Revenue rose 4 percent. Defense contractors are just beginning to see what is expected to be a major slowdown in military spending in the U.S. and Europe. Boeing says defense revenue will fall roughly 5 percent in 2012.

Boeing predicted a 2012 profit of $4.05 to $4.25 per share. Analysts had been expecting a profit of $4.90 per share. Not counting 83 cents per share in higher-than-expected pension expense and other one-time items, Boeing expects an adjusted profit of $5.06 to $5.26 per share.

The company forecast revenue of $78 billion to $80 billion. Analysts were expecting $78.45 billion.

Boeing, based in Chicago, says it plans to deliver 585 to 600 commercial planes this year, up from 477 last year. It delivered three of its new 787s last year, and nine of its new 747-8 superjumbo jets. Boeing says revenue from commercial planes will grow at least 31 percent this year.

Shares fell $1.94, or 2.6 percent, to $73.42 in morning trading.

Studies: Avastin may fight early breast cancers (AP)

Surprising results from two new studies may reopen debate about the value of Avastin for breast cancer. The drug helped make tumors disappear in certain women with early-stage disease, researchers found.

Avastin recently lost approval for treating advanced breast cancer, but the new studies suggest it might help women whose disease has not spread so widely. These were the first big tests of the drug for early breast cancer, and doctors were cautiously excited that it showed potential to help.

In one study, just over one third of women given Avastin plus chemotherapy for a few months before surgery had no sign of cancer in their breasts when doctors went to operate, versus 28 percent of women given chemo alone. In the other study, more than 18 percent on Avastin plus chemo had no cancer in their breasts or lymph nodes at surgery versus 15 percent of those on chemo alone.

A big caveat, though: The true test is whether Avastin improves survival, and it's too soon to know that ? both studies are still tracking the women's health. The drug also has serious side effects.

"I don't think it's clear yet whether this is going to be a winner," Dr. Harry Bear of Virginia Commonwealth University said of Avastin. But he added, "I don't think we're done with it."

Bear led one study, in the United States. Dr. Gunter von Minckwitz of the University of Frankfurt led the other in Germany. Results are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Avastin (uh-VAS'-tihn) is still on the market for some colon, lung, kidney and brain tumors. In 2008, it won conditional U.S. approval for advanced breast cancer because it seemed to slow the disease. Further research showed it didn't meaningfully extend life and could cause heart problems, bleeding and other problems. The government revoked its approval for breast cancer in November.

Now doctors can prescribe Avastin for breast cancer but insurers may not pay. Treatment can cost $10,000 a month. The drug is made by California-based Genentech, part of the Swiss company Roche. It is still approved for treating advanced breast cancer in Europe and Japan.

The new studies tested it in a relatively novel way ? before surgery. This is sometimes done to shrink tumors that seem inoperable, or to enable women to have just a lump removed instead of the whole breast.

The women in the studies had tumors that were large enough to warrant treatment besides surgery. Their cancers were not the type that can be treated by Herceptin, another widely used drug.

In the U.S. study, 1,200 women were given chemo or chemo plus infusions of Avastin. By the time of their surgery, no cancer could be found in the breasts of more than 34 percent of those given Avastin versus 28 percent of the others. (Surgeons still have to operate because they don't know the tumor is gone until they check tissue samples.)

The German study involved 1,900 women including some with larger tumors. It used a stricter definition of cancer-free at surgery: no sign of disease in the breast or lymph nodes rather than just the breast. No cancer was seen in 18 percent of women on Avastin versus 15 percent of those given only chemo. Different chemo drugs were used ? a factor that might change Avastin's effectiveness.

The U.S. study was paid for by the National Cancer Institute with some support from drug companies. The German study was sponsored by drug companies. Some researchers consult for Genentech or other makers of cancer drugs.

If even one of these studies shows a survival advantage for Avastin "that would be a game changer" although side effects remain a concern, said Dr. Gary Lyman. He is a Duke University researcher who was on the federal advisory panel that recommended revoking Avastin's approval.

However, von Minckwitz said side effects are more justifiable in early breast cancer patients because "the intention is cure" rather than in late-stage disease where cure isn't usually possible.

Of the more than 200,000 women in the U.S. diagnosed each year with breast cancer, about 30,000 are like those in the new studies, Lyman estimated.

But the studies' impact could be far greater: The participants' tissue samples are being analyzed for genes and biomarkers to predict which women are most likely to respond to Avastin. That could lead to a relook of using the drug for certain women with advanced disease, too.

Three other studies are under way testing Avastin in early breast cancer; one is expected to have results by the end of this year, said Dr. Sandra Horning, global development chief of cancer drugs for Roche and Genentech. The company does not plan to seek any change in Avastin's use until more results are available, she said.

Georgia falls to No. 1 Kentucky 57-44 (AP)

ATHENS, Ga. ? Georgia kept it close most of the first half against top-ranked Kentucky.

Then, just like that, the game got away from the Bulldogs.

Darius Miller came off the bench to score 19 points and the Wildcats pulled away just before halftime, cruising to a 57-44 victory over Georgia on Tuesday night despite their lowest-scoring game of the season.

Led by Nemanja Djurisic's 10 first-half points, the Bulldogs (10-10, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) showed no fear early on against a Kentucky team playing its first game since moving back to the top of the rankings. Georgia withstood a 10-0 run by the Wildcats and trailed only 23-22 with less than 6 minutes to go in the period.

Suddenly, the Wildcats (20-1, 6-0) turned it on. Kyle Wiltjer knocked down a 3-pointer, then passed to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for a dunk. Dustin Ware answered for the home team with a 3-pointer, but that jumper with 5:01 remaining was Georgia's final field goal of the half.

Kentucky finished the half with a 10-1 spurt, as Miller scored seven straight on a 3-pointer and two jumpers from inside the arc. After that, the Wildcats' 12th straight win was a formality, even though they scored only 19 points in the second half.

"We had a burp there on defense late in the first half," Georgia coach Mark Fox said. "We were never able to get back in striking distance after that. It was a costly time period, but Kentucky is a terrific team. Their defense is just so good."

Fox said the Bulldogs simply couldn't cope with a team that has the 6-foot-8 Miller at guard and 6-7 Kidd-Gilchrist playing small forward.

"Their length in their size just overpowers you," he said. "When your 2 guard is as big as Miller is, then you have Kidd-Gilchrist at the 3 ? and those guys are the size of power forwards ? they can just overpower you."

Miller, who had started eight of the previous nine games for Kentucky, returned to the sixth-man role he had played earlier in the season. It didn't really matter. The senior made 7 of 8 shots, including all four from 3-point range.

Good thing he did.

Kidd-Gilchrist, with 14 points, was the only other Kentucky player in double figures. The Wildcats' lowest-scoring game before Tuesday was a 62-52 victory over Old Dominion in November.

"I know there are times I have to step up," Miller said. "We have different leaders. We all understand that. We're happy with that. Tonight, the guys were looking for me because they knew I was hitting."

No one was hitting in the second half. Kentucky went more than 5 minutes without scoring and made just 7 of 23 shots over the final 20 minutes. Needless to say, coach John Calipari knows there are plenty of things his team can improve on before its next game Saturday at LSU.

"We're just into our own thing right now and you can't be a special team and be that way," he said. "The biggest thing is let's step this thing up. Last year's team, I couldn't believe we were as good as were so I didn't have to say a whole lot. This year's team, we could be really special and we're not right now."

Kentucky, which had been No. 1 in The Associated Press rankings for two weeks early in the season, returned to the lead spot after Syracuse lost last weekend. They arrived in Athens to face rebuilding Georgia, which has lost five of its last six but did start out with some inspired play before its first home sellout of the season.

"Everybody got up for this game, and we kind of rode that at the beginning," Georgia's Gerald Robinson said.

It didn't last. Not with Georgia's top two scorers having miserable nights. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was 3 of 11 from the field and finished with seven points ? less than half his 14.7 average. Robinson, averaging 13.8, settled for six points on 3-of-14 shooting.

"We fought hard," Ware said, "but we just couldn't get it done."

Down by 12 points at halftime, the Bulldogs staggered toward their tunnel with heads down, knowing they had given Kentucky their best shot and still faced a double-digit deficit.

Even though the shots didn't fall in the second half, the Wildcats never let up on the boards or at the defensive end. Kentucky finished with a commanding 41-26 rebounding edge and held Georgia to just 35 percent shooting (19 of 55).

Kidd-Gilchrist had a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds. Anthony Davis also had 11 rebounds.

Ware led Georgia with 12 points. Djurisic failed to score in the second half.

After the break, neither team seemed to play with as much fire ? maybe because so many shots clanked off the rim ? and the crowd amused itself with dueling chants of "Go Big Blue!" vs. "U-G-A!" There certainly wasn't much to cheer about on the court, with Kentucky appearing to play down to its competition and Georgia never getting closer than 10.

Since their only loss, a 73-72 setback to Indiana on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, the Wildcats have won by an average of 17.3 points.

Not good enough, according to Calipari.

"I'm happy we won," he said. "But I want us to be even better."

Simon Cowell to launch DJ talent show (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? TV personality and music producer Simon Cowell is launching a new talent competition to find the world's best DJs.

Already known to television audiences in Britain and the United States as the acerbic judge on hit talent shows like "American Idol", "The X Factor" and "Britain's Got Talent", the 52-year-old is looking to expand his empire.

"DJ's are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show," he said in a statement.

The new format will be co-produced by SYCO, Cowell's joint venture with Sony Music, and Overbrook Entertainment, a U.S. entertainment company founded by Hollywood star Will Smith.

Sony Pictures Television will also be a partner in the venture, which has been in development for more than a year. Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith has been involved for Overbrook.

The three parties said they would announce their broadcast partners in Britain and the United States soon.

Joe Paterno, revered coach tainted by scandal, dies (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) ? Penn State's Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football history who was fired in November over a child sexual abuse scandal involving an assistant that rocked America, died on Sunday of lung cancer. He was 85.

Paterno won adoration from fans of the highly successful and profitable Penn State football program and they unleashed invective at the university board of trustees who fired him unceremoniously after 46 years as head coach, tarnishing his outsized legacy.

Equally outraged were his critics and advocates for victims of sexual abuse who faulted Paterno for his relative inaction upon hearing an accusation that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused a young boy in the Penn State football showers in 2002.

Paterno told university officials but not police, opening him to criticism that he protected an accused child molester for nine years.

Sandusky, 67, who has maintained his innocence, faces 52 criminal counts accusing him of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, using his position as head of a The Second Mile, a charity dedicated to helping troubled children, to find his victims. The court placed him under house arrest.

Waves of mourners descended on a makeshift shrine to Paterno outside the university's Beaver Stadium. They draped an American flag on a statue of Paterno and wrapped its neck with a Penn State scarf.

Sobbing at the statue's feet was Dana Gordon, a 1982 graduate who blamed the school's board of trustees for hastening Paterno's death by firing him in a "callous way."

"The way the board treated him took a lot of the fight out of him," Gordon said.

Later, a few thousand mourners braved freezing cold temperatures to attend a vigil. Many held candles while the football team's marching band played somber music, including "Amazing Grace."

"I am not only a better player because of him, but also a better person as well," Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin said in a ceremony that made only vague references to the scandal. "This guy was not only a football coach. He was also a father, a husband, and I consider him a friend."

The scandal raised questions about the measures the university took to protect Sandusky and a football program that Forbes magazine estimated made a profit of $53 million in 2010, especially since accusations against him first surfaced in 1998. At that time a university police detective admonished Sandusky to stop showering naked with boys but stopped short of bringing criminal charges.

One of the biggest scandals in college sports history, it provoked a national discussion about pedophilia in the same way charges involving Roman Catholic priests did years earlier.

The matter also drew impassioned arguments about the balance between protecting the young and the rights of criminal defendants, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

"I hope his passing and the controversy surrounding Sandusky will deter other people, especially powerful people, from covering up child sex crimes," said David Clohessy, director of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, a support group.

"Even decades of professional achievement should not obscure dreadfully reckless and callous inaction that results in child sex crimes," Clohessy said.

Sandusky issued a statement sending condolences to the Paterno family but did not mention the investigation.

"Nobody did more for the academic reputation of Penn State than Joe Paterno. He maintained a high standard in a very difficult profession," Sandusky said.

Paterno won a reputation for making sure his players graduated and one of the program's mottos was "Success With Honor."

Paterno's downfall was spectacular. For decades he was a symbol of vitality who patrolled the Penn State sidelines with unchallenged authority, easily recognizable by his thick eyeglasses and jet-black hair that grayed a little in his later years. His two national championships, in 1982 and 1986, won him enduring loyalty from fans who affectionately called him "JoePa."

In the end, he was confined to a wheelchair upon breaking his hip in a fall one month after being fired, and he wore a wig after losing his hair to chemotherapy, according to the Washington Post, which interviewed Paterno about a week before his death.

Paterno was surrounded by family when he died 9:25 a.m. on Sunday of metastatic small cell carcinoma of the lung, Mount Nittany Medical Center said in a statement.

IMPACT ON CRIMINAL CASE

Paterno's death may not significantly affect the case against Sandusky, but was more likely to weaken the criminal case against two university officials charged with perjury, legal experts said.

Paterno learned of at least one accusation against Sandusky in 2002, when graduate assistant Mike McQueary told Paterno he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy of about 10 years old in the showers of the Lasch Football Building.

Paterno told university officials but not police, a decision that ultimately led to his downfall.

Paterno, in an interview with the Washington Post published on January 14, said he was uncertain how to handle the matter and trusted the university administration.

Paterno testified before the grand jury that he informed former athletic director Tim Curley about what McQueary told him. About 10 days later, McQueary testified, he was called to a meeting with Curley and university finance official Gary Schultz to discuss what happened.

Curley and Schultz both face perjury charges based on their inaction. Schultz also testified before the grand jury he was aware of the 1998 investigation of Sandusky.

University President Graham Spanier was fired along with Paterno, and Curley and Schultz stepped down.

"If he (Paterno) had known the devastation that this means, he would have reacted differently," said Peter Pelullo, founder of Let Go, Let Peace Come In, a support group helping some of Sandusky's accusers with counseling.

Because Paterno was not believed to have witnessed any purported abuse, his testimony would not have been crucial to Sandusky trial, said Paul Callan, a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney.

But his death could set back the criminal case against Curley and Schultz because they will be denied the chance to cross-examine an important witness.

Max Kennerly, a Philadelphia trial lawyer who has followed the case, said Paterno's death was unlikely to alter any civil litigation being contemplated by Sandusky's accusers. If any were considering suing Paterno, they could just name his estate.

"Death doesn't change your status as a party," Kennerly said.

Single-Sided Headphones Let You Cheat Death By Keeping One Ear Open [Headphones]

Earbuds (or good ones, anyway) work like corks for your ears: sealing in music while blocking surrounding sounds. They're fine when you're safe at home, but not so much outside when you need to be aware of your environment. More »

Health benefits of exercise may depend on cellular degradation

ScienceDaily (Jan. 20, 2012) ? The health benefits of exercise on blood sugar metabolism may come from the body's ability to devour itself, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers report in the journal Nature.

Autophagy is a process by which a cell responds to starvation and other stresses by degrading damaged or unneeded parts of itself to produce energy. It is sometimes called the cell's housekeeping pathway.

"Exercise is known to have many health benefits but the mechanisms have been unclear. Autophagy is also known to have several health benefits, and these benefits correspond closely to the effects of exercise. We hypothesized that some of the health benefits of exercise might be explained through autophagy," said senior author Dr. Beth Levine, professor of internal medicine and microbiology who leads the Center for Autophagy Research at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Levine, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator at the medical center, decided to focus on one specific health effect of exercise -- the ability of exercise to prevent blood sugar abnormalities in the face of a high-fat diet. Her mouse study provides the first evidence that exercise stimulates autophagy.

The researchers found that mice genetically unable to increase autophagy in response to short-term exercise have decreased endurance and fail to experience the normal benefits of exercise on blood sugar metabolism.

This discovery led the team to investigate whether autophagy is important in the protective effects of chronic exercise on diabetes. A high-fat diet induced diabetes-like changes in blood sugar metabolism in both control mice and in test mice that were genetically unable to increase autophagy above baseline levels, said Dr. Congcong He, lead author and a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Levine's lab. However, the researchers found that exercise reversed these blood sugar abnormalities in control mice but not in the autophagy-deficient mice.

"Our finding that exercise fails to improve glucose metabolism in autophagy-deficient mice strongly suggests that autophagy is an important mechanism by which exercise protects against diabetes," said Dr. Levine. "It also raises the possibility that activation of autophagy may contribute to other health benefits of exercise, including protection against cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and aging.

Dr. Levine has made fundamental discoveries previously that are in large part credited for expanding the field of autophagy research. In 1999, she identified the first mammalian autophagy gene, beclin 1, and its link to the suppression of breast cancer, which marked the first discovery of an association between defects in an autophagy gene and a human disease.

She similarly is credited with demonstrating that autophagy functions in innate immunity -- protecting against lethal viral encephalitis -- as well as initially reporting that autophagy plays a role in lifespan extension, shown in a study of C. elegans worms.

IBM 4Q earnings beat estimates, revenue falls shy (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? IBM Corp.'s fourth-quarter earnings handily beat Wall Street's expectations on Thursday, helped by higher revenue and profit margins in the technology icon's lucrative software and services segments.

The results and IBM's stronger-than-expected outlook for this year sent IBM's stock up more than 2 percent after hours. The company offered a welcome sign of stability amid the global economic turmoil that's prompting worries about a slowdown in technology spending by businesses and governments, who are IBM's customers.

One sore spot was revenue, which fell short of analyst expectations; the rise in software and services revenue wasn't enough to offset a decline in hardware. Also, the stronger dollar is squeezing overseas revenue.

IBM earned $5.49 billion, or $4.62 per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That's up 4 percent from $5.26 billion, or $4.25 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $4.71 per share, easily surpassing analysts' expectations of $4.61 per share.

Revenue grew 2 percent to $29.49 billion from $29.02 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected slightly higher revenue of $29.7 billion.

IBM said currency shifts since its last quarterly report in October lowered fourth-quarter revenue by about $300 million. The deepening economic crisis in Europe, along with the continuing weakness in the U.S. economy and signs of a slowdown in emerging markets are prompting worries about global companies like IBM.

But IBM has long said its long-term contracts insulate it from economic swings, and its full-year forecast is bright. IBM expects adjusted earnings of at least $14.85 per share, above the $14.77 per share that analysts are predicting.

New CEO Ginni Rometty said IBM is "well on track" toward its long-term goal of hitting at least $20 per share in adjusted earnings in 2015 ? a rare example of a long-term earnings target disclosed publicly by a such a large company.

Revenue rose at two of IBM's three largest divisions ? software by 9 percent and services by 3 percent. Hardware revenue fell 8 percent. In the third quarter, IBM's services revenue grew 8 percent, its software revenue climbed 13 percent and its hardware revenue rose 4 percent.

By geography, IBM said revenue from the Americas grew 3 percent in the fourth quarter. Revenue from Europe, the Middle East and Africa combined was up 1 percent and revenue from Asia increased 2 percent.

IBM said its new contract signings were $20.4 billion in the fourth quarter, slightly above analysts' expectations. The company's services backlog at the end of the year was $141 billion, up by $4 billion from the end of the third quarter. Services backlog refers measures the value of work under contract that the company expects to book as revenue in future quarters.

For all of 2011, IBM earned $15.86 billion, or $13.06 per share, up 7 percent from $14.83 billion, or 11.52 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $13.44 per share, above analysts' expectations of $13.36 per share.

Revenue was $106.92 billion, up 7 percent from $99.87 billion in 2010. Wall Street was expecting $107.08 billion.

The Armonk, N.Y.-based company's stock rose $4.53, or 2.5 percent, to $185.05 after hours. The stock had closed down 55 cents at $180.52.

Utah doc facing murder charge gets transferred (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A Utah doctor facing a murder charge for a botched late-term abortion appears to have been extradited to Maryland.

Salt Lake County jail Lt. Pam Lofgreen says Dr. Nicola Irene Riley was released to the custody of another police agency Thursday.

Riley waived extradition to Maryland on Jan. 9 after a Utah judge denied a bail request.

Maryland authorities charged the 46-year-old physician in December with one count each of first-degree and second-degree felony murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Charges stem from an August 2010 procedure that left an 18-year-old woman with a ruptured uterus and injured bowel.

Prosecutors say Riley drove the woman to the hospital rather than call 911.

Riley has not yet entered a plea, although her defense attorneys have said nothing illegal occurred.

CDC: Many teen moms didn't think it could happen (AP)

ATLANTA ? A new government study suggests a lot of teenage girls are clueless about their chances of getting pregnant.

In a survey of thousands of teenage mothers who had unintended pregnancies, about a third said they didn't use birth control because they didn't believe they could pregnant.

What were they thinking, exactly, isn't clear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey didn't ask teens to explain their reasoning.

But other researchers have talked to teen moms who believed they couldn't get pregnant the first time they had sex, didn't think they could get pregnant at that time of the month or thought they were sterile.

"This report underscores how much misperception, ambivalence and magical thinking put teens at risk for unintended pregnancy," said Bill Albert, a spokesman for the Washington, D.C.-based National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

Other studies have asked teens about their contraception use and beliefs about pregnancy. But the CDC report released Thursday is the first to focus on teens who didn't want to get pregnant but did.

The researchers interviewed nearly 5,000 teenage girls in 19 states who gave birth after unplanned pregnancies in 2004 through 2008. The survey was done through mailed questionnaires with telephone follow-up.

About half of the girls in the survey said they were not using any birth control when they got pregnant. That's higher than surveys of teens in general, which have found that fewer than 20 percent said they didn't use contraception the last time they had sex.

"I think what surprised us was the extent that they were not using contraception," said Lorrie Gavin, a CDC senior scientist who co-authored the report.

Some of the teen moms were asked what kind of birth control they used: Nearly 20 percent said they used the pill or a birth control patch. Another 24 percent said they used condoms.

CDC officials said they do not believe that the pill, condoms and other forms of birth control were faulty. Instead, they think the teens failed to use it correctly or consistently.

Only 13 percent said they didn't use birth control because they had trouble getting it.

Another finding: Nearly a quarter of the teen moms said they did not use contraception because their partner did not want them to. That suggests that sex education must include not only information about anatomy and birth control, but also about how to deal with situations in which a girl feels pressured to do something she doesn't want to, Gavin said.

The findings are sobering, Albert said. But it's important to remember that the overall teen birth rate has been falling for some time, and recently hit its lowest mark in about 70 years.

Albert said it would be a mistake to come away from the report saying, "They can't figure this out?" "Most of them are figuring it out," he said.

Foreclosed Homes On Florida's First Coast, Jacksonville Area, FL

I honestly don't particularly care for the negative tone of this headline (tell me if you agree or disagree), there is some helpful information in this article.

For example, there are phone numbers here to report overgrown, trashy yards as well as phone numbers for boarded up and/or structural problems with properties, which can help homeowners report these issues to the proper people.

The graph at the top shows how many properties are in foreclosure and how many are bank owned on a county-by-county basis.....and could be a bit misleading, as it does not put those stats in context.? The source of the statistics is listed as RealtyTrac, not our local association.? I have first hand seen the mis-statement of homes in foreclosure with RealtyTrac's stats.?

These stats, from what I recall (and I have not been active with RealtyTrac for a few years) include all Lis Pendens (first official document recorded pertaining to foreclosure) which includes: association placed LP's, 2nd mortgage LP's.? These can be, in many cases, easily made up as they are much smaller figures than the primary mortgage, so it is my belief this figures can be inflated.

I wonder why the local reporter of the local newspaper chose to go with RealtyTrac's numbers vs. the local organization?

Ice storm hits Seattle flights; 200,000 lose power

wsdot.wa.gov

This traffic camera image shows crews responding to an overturned car on State Route 599 north of Seattle, Wash., on Thursday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

SEATTLE -- A day after a major Pacific storm covered Washington state in snow, the Seattle area?on Thursday dealt with?a new menace: an ice storm that shut down the airport and toppled trees --?cutting power to some 200,000 homes and businesses, cutting off roads and taking the life of a man on his ATV.

Some commuters gingerly tried to make it to work as a freezing rain iced over roads, but others stayed home.

Several major roads were cut off by fallen trees weighed down by ice and snow.?Near Issaquah, a suburb east of Seattle, a man on his ATV was?killed by a falling tree, NBC affiliate KING5.com reported.

Gov. Christine Gregoire declared a state of emergency by late morning, a move that would allow her to deploy National Guard troops if needed.

The National Weather Service used the Emergency Alert System to break into Thursday morning broadcasts with an ice storm warning until noon for the Seattle area and southwest Washington. That was later extended to 2 p.m.

A mix of snow and ice was expected Thursday afternoon and overnight before warmer temperatures bring rain and the possibility of flooding.

Time lapse video shows the snow falling Wednesday on Seattle.

Downed trees also led to the outages, and many customers?might not see power back for days.

"We think it will be 3 to 4 days ? maybe longer," Puget Sound Energy said on its Facebook page, adding that it was dealing with 500 outage locations.

Sea-Tac Airport closed early Thursday so that its three runways could be de-iced.?Two runways had reopened by midday, but many airlines reported flight cancellations.

Lines hundreds of people long snaked around nearly every ticket counter, with many passengers on their cell phones as they tried furiously to rebook their flights. Reader-boards showed the vast majority of flights canceled or delayed.

At Snoqualmie Pass just east of Seattle, Interstate 90 closed Thursday morning for avalanche control.

Freezing rain and ice pellets caused numerous accidents in the Seattle area, where drivers are mostly inexperienced with driving in snow or ice. The last widespread freezing rain in Seattle was in December 1996, said meteorologist Jeff Michalski at the Weather Service office in Seattle.

On Wednesday, downtown Seattle saw two inches of snow but Olympia, the state capital, got 11 inches and other areas were also in double digits.

The Washington State Patrol said it responded to more than 700 accidents on Wednesday.

It may not have been the disaster some were predicting, but the winter storm shut down much of the region. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Thursday's forecast was for a mix of snow and rain, and the Weather Service warned that urban and small stream flooding was possible Friday, when another, albeit milder,?storm was expected to hit the state. Rain and temperatures in the 40s would start melting snow on the ground.

STORY: Child drowns, mom presumed dead in storm

The National Weather Service also issued flood warnings for several Oregon rivers and several roads were closed because of flooding in Salem and nearby Turner and Scio.

Authorities called for voluntary evacuations of the town of Mapleton, Ore., which has about 1,000 residents, and some nearby areas because roads are expected to flood.

Don Ryan / AP

Downtown business are protected from flood waters with sandbags in Scio, Ore., on Thursday.

Residents of 22 homes were urged to evacuate near tiny Lewisburg, Ore., about 80 miles south of Portland, due to unstable land and a landslide.

The Associated Press and Reuters?contributed to this report.

Google and Mozilla join anti-Sopa/Pipa protest

More heavyweights show their opposition to Sopa and Pipa, as two internet giants join the pack.

By Tom Brewster, 18 Jan 2012 at 12:20

Google and Mozilla have joined the raft of companies opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and the PROTECT IP Act (Pipa) in the US.

Various tech giants have criticised aspects of the two bills, Pipa going through the US Senate and Sopa in the House of Representatives.

Wikipedia and Wordpress have both shutdown for the day in protest, whilst other firms such as Rackspace and Twitter have voiced their opposition to Sopa and Pipa.

We oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites.

Google claimed the acts would censor the web, handing powers to law enforcement to filter the web and block access to tools that would bypass such filters.

"We know from experience that these powers are on the wish list of oppressive regimes throughout the world," said David Drummond, Google's senior vice president for corporate development and chief legal officer, in a blog post.

"Sopa and Pipa also eliminate due process. They provide incentives for American companies to shut down, block access to and stop servicing US and foreign websites that copyright and trademark owners allege are illegal without any due process or ability of a wrongfully targeted website to seek restitution."

Google also claimed the acts would not stop piracy, as pirate sites would simply change their addresses.

The internet giant has highlighted this issue on its US home page and is asking people to petition congress via a special landing page.

"Like many businesses, entrepreneurs and web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue websites without asking American companies to censor the internet," a Google spokesperson said.

Mozilla has chosen to redirect traffic from Mozilla.org to an action page for 12 hours. Visitors will be presented black page with a call to action message to increase awareness of Pipa and Sopa.

The action will run from 13:00GMT today through to 01:00 GMT tomorrow.

"While we generally support the end goal of the legislation ? to limit online piracy of legitimate content ? we believe that both Pipa and Sopa, in their current drafts, have serious flaws in the proposed implementation of the legislation," said Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla, in a blog post.

"Among them is the requirement for online service and content providers to police the system. This would create an undue burden on businesses that were not designed for this purpose, would require more lawyers to be involved, and would extend the hand of government much deeper into these organisations."

Kovacs claimed the acts would "spread a chilling effect across the web that would significantly limit innovation."

Sopa has been shelved for the time being, but Pipa could still pass through the Senate.

The Wikipedia blackout is not as comprehensive as the company may have liked. Firefox users can simply add the NoScript add on and disable JavaScript to access the site.

Declines in melanoma deaths limited to the most educated

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

A new study from the American Cancer Society finds recent declines in melanoma mortality rates in non-Hispanic Whites in the U.S. mainly reflect declines in those with the highest level of education, and reveals a widening disparity in melanoma mortality rates by education. The authors say the findings call for early detection strategies to effectively target high-risk, low-educated, non-Hispanic White individuals. The study is published Online First by Archives of Dermatology.

Since the early 1990s, overall melanoma mortality rates among Non-Hispanic Whites (ages 25 to 64 years) have been declining in men and women. But it has not been known whether these death rates might differ according to socioeconomic status (SES).

To study whether melanoma death rate trends might differ according to SES, researchers led by Vilma Cokkinides, Ph. D, reviewed death certificates from 26 states, representing approximately 45 percent of the U.S. population. They found melanoma mortality declined about ten percent between over the latest ten-year span (1993-97 to 2003-07) in both men (RR= 0.916, 95% C.I.= 0.878, 0.954) and women (RR = 0.907, 95% C.I.= 0.857, 0.957).

However, declines occurred only among those with at least 13 years of education or more, irrespective of sex. In fact, there were actually non-significant increases among the least educated individuals. As a result, the educational gap in melanoma mortality rates widened by 51.7% in men and by 35.7% in women between the two time periods (1993-97 and 2003-07).

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to document this education gap in melanoma mortality trends among Non-Hispanic Whites in the U.S.," said Dr. Cokkinides. "The reasons for the widening of the educational gap in mortality rates are not yet understood, but we do know the cornerstone of melanoma control is recognizing the signs of melanoma early. Lower socioeconomic status is associated with suboptimal knowledge and awareness of melanoma, inadequate health insurance, and lower rates of skin self-examination or physician screening."

The authors conclude recent declines in melanoma mortality are largely confined to more educated groups, and that an increasingly disproportionate burden of fatal melanoma among low SES populations calls for more vigilant primary and secondary prevention education campaigns directed to high-risk, low SES individuals and the physicians that care for them.

Dressed-up stars arrive for glitzy Golden Globes (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Ricky Gervais, who is prone to ruffle feathers with sharp wisecracks aimed at celebrities, made an early arrival Sunday on the Golden Globes red carpet, along with such stars as George Clooney, Sarah Michelle Gellar and the dog from "The Artist."

Clooney, who come to the awards armed with nominations for two movies, was braced for the tart-tongued Gervais, who will once again be host. "I find him very funny and I think he'll probably tee off on everybody," Clooney said.

The Globes have equally good comedy and drama masks this year. Alongside heavyweight dramas, the category for best musical or comedy at the Globes usually is more of a lark, with nominees rarely emerging with best-picture prospects for Hollywood's top prize, the Academy Awards.

Yet Sunday's musical or comedy contenders make up a strong bunch that could give their best-drama cousins at the Globes a run for their money come Oscar time.

Expected to make the most noise at the Globes ceremony, to be carried live on NBC from 8-11 p.m. EST, is the silent film "The Artist," with six nominations, including best musical or comedy, directing and writing honors for Michel Hazanavicius, and acting slots for Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Tied for second with five nominations each are the Deep South tale "The Help" and Clooney's Hawaiian family story "The Descendants," both of them among best-drama contenders.

One of the stars Sunday arriving for the ceremony was definitely well-behaved and well-dressed ? Uggie the dog from "The Artist" did tricks on the red carpet: Standing up and rolling over to play dead. After one of the tricks, his handler adjusted his black bow tie.

With the Oscars choosing up to 10 best-picture contenders when nominations come out Jan. 24, "The Artist" could have some other lighter fare as company there. Globe musical or comedy nominees "Midnight in Paris" and "Bridesmaids" have solid Oscar nomination prospects, along with the weighty dramas academy voters historically prefer.

On the carpet, Sarah Michelle Gellar was spotted without husband Freddie Prinze Jr. "He's watching football," she told E! "This is the worst date night I could possibly think of." Nominee Sofia Vergara from "Modern Family" was in a Vera Wang gown and was asked why she liked the designer. "She sends me dresses that zip, and they close," she told E!

Red carpet interviews don't always involve words. "The Artist" actor James Cromwell was asked to describe how he felt about being at the Globe awards without talking. Wide-eyed and flashing a smile, he clapped his hands and looked skyward.

Most years, the musical or comedy category is filled with nominees that have little or no chance at the Oscars, such as last year's Globe nominees "The Tourist" and "Burlesque." The last time a musical or comedy Globe winner earned the best-picture Oscar was nine years ago, when "Chicago" triumphed at both shows.

This time, the dual categories at the Globes could create an Oscar showdown between the dramatic and musical-comedy winners.

Along with "The Artist," Kristen Wiig's wedding romp "Bridesmaids" and Woody Allen's romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," Globe nominees for best musical or comedy are Joseph Gordon-Levitt's cancer tale "50/50" and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe story "My Week With Marilyn."

Besides "The Descendants" and "The Help," best-drama contenders are Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo," Clooney's political thriller "The Ides of March," Brad Pitt's sports tale "Moneyball" and Steven Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse."

Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of 89 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets, the Globes used to have a strong record predicting the films that would go on to win best-picture at the Oscars. But lately, a best-picture win at the Globes has not translated into victory on Oscar night.

Over the last seven years, only one Globe best-picture winner ? 2008's "Slumdog Millionaire" ? has gone on to claim the top Oscar trophy. Before that stretch, the Globes had been on an eight-year streak in which one of its two best-picture recipients also won the main prize at the Academy Awards.

Last year, "The Social Network" won best-drama at the Globes and looked like the early Oscar favorite. But momentum later swung to eventual Oscar best-picture winner "The King's Speech." The year before, "Avatar" was named best drama at the Globes, while "The Hurt Locker" took best picture at the Oscars.

The Globes have a better track record predicting who will win Oscars for acting. A year ago, all four actors who won Oscars earned Globes first ? lead players Colin Firth for "The King's Speech" and Natalie Portman for "Black Swan" and "The Fighter" supporting stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.

This time, "The Help" leads the acting categories with three nominations, for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain. Along with Clooney, Pitt and Williams, other nominees include Meryl Streep for the Margaret Thatcher story "The Iron Lady," Leonardo DiCaprio for the J. Edgar Hoover biography "J. Edgar," Christopher Plummer for the father-son tale "Beginners" and Glenn Close and Janet McTeer for the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs."

Ryan Gosling has two nominations, as dramatic actor for "The Ides of March" and actor in a musical or comedy for the romance "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Morgan Freeman will receive the Globes' Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement at Sunday's Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony.

Gervais has returned to host the Globes for the third-straight time. If the caustic comedian decides to again bite the hand that feeds him, a case working its way through federal court in Los Angeles might provide some of his material: the HFPA is fighting for the right to dump longtime Globes broadcaster NBC if it can get a better deal with another network.
