As an Australian who believes same-sex couples should be able to marry, I strongly support the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2010.

The Bill will strengthen relationships, families and marriage, and will make Australia a fairer and more inclusive nation.

I support provisions of the Bill that will allow a celebrant who is a minister of religion to refuse to marry same-sex partners.

I oppose civil unions as a substitute for full equality in marriage for same-sex partners. Civil unions can reinforce ideas within parts of our community that gay and lesbian people are not equal members of our society. This in turn can consciously and subconsciously help justify discriminatory language and behaviour within our society. The basic fact is that without marriage equality, gay and lesbian people are not equal members of our society.

Without marriage equality the government is condoning unequal treatment of gay and lesbian people within society more broadly. The government is saying that gay and lesbian relationships are not of the same standard as heterosexual relationships, which condones discrimination and mistreatment in the schoolyard, the workplace and the street. When a sub-community is given fewer rights the government is saying that these people are lesser people and not worthy of the same level of protection as the rest of society.

I have experienced the loneliness and despair of being discriminated against because of my sexuality in school. I know how so many young Australians have suffered. And there are far too many who have suffered more than they could cope. As a society we need to agree that this type of discrimination is not acceptable and no one should be the subject of such behaviour.

I have been with my same-sex partner five years. We have made a commitment to spend the rest of our lives together. We have supported each other emotionally, socially, physically and financially ? and will continue to do so going forward.

As citizens of two different countries we have had our relationship assessed by both the Australian and Swedish governments to ensure we could continue to live together. In order to gain appropriate visas, we have had to prove that we are in a committed and serious relationship. Both governments held our relationship to the same standards as any heterosexual couple in making this assessment, which we believe to be both fair and just.

While holding our relationship to the same standards, the Australian government does not afford us the same rights as those in heterosexual relationships. Despite having proved that we have the same level of commitment as a heterosexual couple, we cannot get married in the country we call our home. It does not make sense that the government recognises same-sex relationships as equal in all respects when making an assessment of our commitment to each other, and yet does not afford us the same rights.

I know a number of Australian couples that have gone overseas to marry due to their strong desire to demonstrate their commitment to one-another. For each of these couples the decision has been fraught with conflicting emotions. While they are sure of the commitment they are making, they are forced to do this in an environment away from most of their family and friends ? an important element in almost all marriages.

Although Australian, I lived in Sweden for over four year. Sweden supports marriage equality in law. During my time in Sweden I saw the positive impact that marriage equality provides the gay and lesbian community. However, I failed to see any negative impact on the broader community. It has not otherwise changed the nature of the institution of marriage in the country, nor has it affected how straight people perceive their own relationships or families.

Opening up the common vernacular that used to describe relationships in our society is very empowering. I have seen how the ability for gay and lesbian couples to use the same words in Sweden allows all people to talk about their relationship with a level of confidence and pride that I have not seen in Australia. Having a common language for everyone means that gays and lesbians in equally committed relationships can have their relationships viewed on an equal level without being questioned.

In Australia gay and lesbian people are left searching for words as ?boyfriend,? ?girlfriend? and ?partner? fail to demonstrate the level commitment they have in their relationships. Describing a partner as a ?husband? or ?wife? is often met with the response that ?that?s not possible,? when all the person means is ?that?s not possible in Australia.? For me marriage equality ultimately comes down to a legal argument. If the government believes gay and lesbian people are considered equal members of our society they should be afforded equal rights. The government already recognises that gay and lesbian couples share an equal level of love and commitment as heterosexual couples ? as demonstrated by the common process to assess couples for partner visas. The government recognises that gay and lesbian people should not be treated differently due to their sexual orientation as described in anti-discrimination laws. Thus the government should enshrine marriage equality into law to remove discrimination against a group that it recognises as equal.

I imagine it would mean that either side can ask the other for something and can expect to receive a compassionate, open reception and honest, thoughtful response.

I would suspect that the artistic home of the future will need to be able to house not simply single artists but collectives of artists (writer/director/composer, choreographer/writer/actor) who need a place to create work. It also seems that the artistic home of the future will not merely be asked to provide ?shelter? but to be a ?melting pot? where artists come and go and, while they are in residence, have impact on the theater as much as receive resources from it. An artistic home would ideally imply shared ownership (of the physical space, of the idea space). After the artist leaves, one would hope that his or her influence would continue to be seen and felt in the offices and board room, on the stage, and in the ethos of the theater.

Food And Drink ? Vegan Carrot Cake For Healthy Eaters

Below is a tasty vegan carrot cake recipe. If you?ve followed my prior recipes, you?ll know that I?m a massive fan of carrot cake recipe that are simple and delicious, and the one I?m going to share with you is not an exception to that rule. This is a vegan recipe, as I said, which means that it does not use any animal products.

Some vegans try to ensure that all edible foods are absent of animal content. Some people will go to great lengths in pursuit of this information. Not long ago I watched a documentary that highlighted animal products in food products that we would usually imagine are completely animal product free. Products like jelly beans and marshmallows (gelatin), mustard (eggs), shortbread (shortening) and even some breakfast cereals. This recipe, however, is 100% free of all animal products so it?s absolutely ideal for vegans.

The ingredients you will need are as follows:

- 1 cup soy milk

- 2 cups grated carrots

- Three (3) cups flour

- Two (2) cups water

- One cup sugar

- Half a teaspoon salt

- One and a half (1 1/2) teaspoons baking soda

- One and a half (1 1/2) cups raisins

- One and a half teaspoons cinnamon

- One and a half teaspoons allspice

- 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Preparation directions for this cake recipe:

1. Make sure that your oven is preheated to 350F (or will be once you?ve finished preparing everything ? about ten (10) minutes).

2. In a saucepan, mix together the water, raisins, carrots and spices. Bring to boiling point then simmer for eight minutes. Add the salt and sugar and continue to simmer for two (2) minutes longer. Now mix in the remainder of the ingredients.

3. Switch off the stove and continue to stir the blend continuously until it cools down.

4. In a large bowl, blend the flour with the bicarbonate of soda and the carrot and raisin blend. Fold these ingredients together.

5. Pour the batter into a lightly greased baking pan and place in the oven uncovered for approximately fifty (50) minutes. Keep a watch on it after half an hour as all ovens do vary a little. When it appears to be finished, poke the middle of the cake with a skewer and if no batter sticks to the skewer, remove the pan from the oven and permit it to cool for ten minutes.

? I?m just going to come out and say this: I?m no expert in economic policy.

I look at the economic crisis that began in 2007, and has puttered along ever since, and I think, sheesh, I?m glad I?m not the chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Being Ben Bernanke ? the current Federal Reserve chairman ? has to be the second-toughest job in the world, after Being Barack Obama. Mr. Bernanke gets begrudging credit for bailing out the US banking system and protecting the savings of millions of Americans. And because he is so powerful, pulling those magical financial levers like the Great and Powerful Oz, he gets blamed for almost everything else, such as a sluggish recovery, high unemployment, and for some hard-core believers in an unfettered free market, for simply being the chairman of the Federal Reserve. ?

In the April edition of The Atlantic, Roger Lowenstein has an excellent profile of Bernanke and his achievements and failures, provocatively entitled "The Villain." A lot of it has to do with the fact that fixing the US and the global economy is painful, and we blame the guy we think is responsible for it. But while Bernanke has become a political target for both the left and the right, a closer look at his record shows that he has done a remarkable job in restoring a sense of order and faith to a market that was threatening to come apart.

During the financial crisis of 2007?09, he bailed out a handful of large banks and devised a series of innovative lending operations to disperse credit to banks, small businesses, and consumers (virtually all of these loans have been repaid at a profit to taxpayers). He also lowered short-term interest rates to nearly zero and made private banks run a gantlet of stress tests to ensure some minimal level of solvency going forward. Although fierce anger against the bailouts persists, there is little argument that this first stage was a success. However untidily the rescue was managed, the financial crisis is over.

? As a boy growing up in a mainly Hispanic border town in Texas, I always envied my bilingual friends who learned Spanish in their homes, who griped about the Dallas Cowboys in Spanish at the dinner table, who could start jokes in English and then deliver up the tasty punchline ? to my chagrin ? in Spanish. For all the talk of ?saving American culture,? these were kids who had assimilated to American culture, but were able to operate in two worlds at once.

I knew they were smarter than me, just because of their grades and their admission to Ivy League schools. But now science tells me why.

India?s Wind Energy Potential 30 Times Greater Than Believed, Study says

A new report says that the wind energy potential in India may be 30 times greater than previous government estimates, a finding that the authors say could provide a critical solution for a country facing chronic electricity shortages.

In an analysis of land actually suitable to wind power development, researchers from the U.S. Energy Department?s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found a potential for 2,006 megawatts of energy with the deployment of 80-meter (262 feet) turbines and 3,121 gigawatts using 120-meter (393 feet) turbines.

The Indian government had previously estimated that the nation?s on-land wind energy potential was 102 gigawatts. Improved turbine efficiency and the inclusion of a wider area of land suitable for wind energy development contributed to the significantly higher estimates.

?The main importance of this study, why it?s groundbreaking, is that wind is one of the most cost-effective and mature renewable energy sources commercially available in India, with an installed capacity of 15 gigawatts and rising rapidly,? said Amol Phadke, lead author of the report.

5 more bodies found in Concordia cruise wreck

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) ? Search crews found five more bodies in the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which struck a reef off an Italian island in January, officials said Thursday.

The discovery raises to 30 the number of bodies found. Two people remain missing and are presumed dead.

The latest bodies were all found in spaces between the hull and the seabed off the Tuscan island of Giglio, according to the Italian Civil Protection agency, which is coordinating search operations. Since the Jan. 13 capsizing, the Concordia has been lying on its side, half submerged in water near Giglio's port.

No details were given about the victims. Earlier, Franco Gabrielli, the official coordinating the search and salvage efforts, told reporters on the island that bodies were spotted when divers were working to set up a robotic device to search otherwise inaccessible parts of the wreck.

The bodies were seen "in the spaces between the hull and the seabed," Gabrielli said. He added that it would take several days of work for the bodies to be removed.

All of the other bodies before Thursday had been found inside the ship, except for three found in the sea near the ship in the first hours after the Concordia capsized.

The ship hit a rocky reef, took on water and turned over just outside the port of the tiny island of Giglio off Tuscany. Divers and searchers have been combing the half-submerged ship, from passenger cabins to elevators to the decks where many of the 4,200 passengers and crew gathered during the delayed and frantic evacuation. Many jumped into the sea when lifeboats were unable to be launched because of the ship's tilt.

Even before the latest bodies were found, eight removed in recent weeks were awaiting official identification. Weeks in the water badly decomposed the remains, and forensic authorities have used DNA sampling to try to identify them.

A crew member from India and several passengers, including an elderly U.S. couple and others from Italy and Germany, are among those listed as missing or unidentified.

The Concordia capsized in a protected sea sanctuary, and salvage teams have been removing fuel since Feb. 12 in hopes of sparing the pristine waters from pollution. Costa Crociere SpA., the Italian cruise company, and Italian officials said fuel removal was expected to be completed by Friday evening.

Occasional bad weather and choppy seas have at times forced suspension of both the search for bodies and the fuel removal.

The operation to remove the wrecked Concordia itself could take as long as 12 months. Bids for the job are being evaluated.

The Concordia's Italian captain is under house arrest near Naples. Capt. Francesco Schettino is under investigation for alleged manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship during the evacuation. Schettino has denied wrongdoing and claimed that the reef wasn't marked on charts.

Investigators are probing allegations that Schettino deliberately came too close to the island. Costa Crociere officials have distanced themselves from Schettino.

SAN DIEGO?? A Marine sergeant who started a Facebook group that is openly critical of President Barack Obama and posted comments saying he will not follow the unlawful orders of the commander in chief is facing possible dismissal from the Corps.

The Marines on Wednesday told Sgt. Gary Stein ? a Camp Pendleton Marine who started the Facebook page called Armed Forces Tea Party ? that he is in violation of Pentagon policy barring troops from political activities.

Stein, a nine-year member of the Corps, said he started the page to encourage fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights. He has also criticized Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for his comments on Syria.

The Marine Corps said in a statement that Stein's commanding officer ordered a preliminary inquiry on March 8 after receiving allegations that Stein posted the political statements violating the Pentagon's directives.

"After reviewing the findings of the preliminary inquiry, the commander decided to address the allegations through administrative action," the Corps said.

"I'm completely shocked that this is happening," Stein said. "I've done nothing wrong. I've only stated what our oath states that I will defend the constitution and that I will not follow unlawful orders. If that's a crime, what is America coming to?"

Stein said he planned to fight the charges. He had applied to extend his service, which was set to expire in a few months.

Stein said in addition to being discharged, he would have his rank reduced to lance corporal if he is proven to be in violation. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego on Wednesday and given a desk job with no access to computers.

According to Pentagon directives, military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Commissioned officers also may not use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the president.

Stein was first cautioned by his superiors at Camp Pendleton in 2010, after he launched his Facebook page and criticized Obama's health care overhaul. Stein volunteered to take down the page while he reviewed the rules at the request of his superiors.

He said he determined he was not in violation and relaunched the page. Last week, he said his superiors told him he could not use social media sites on government computers after he posted the message stating he would not follow the president's unlawful orders.

Stein said his statement was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan.

In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if those orders included detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights.

Another Marine alerted his command about the statement, Stein said.

Stein said he respects the office of the president, but he does not agree with Obama's policies. He said he is within his rights to speak up.

The Marine Corps said Stein is allowed to express his personal opinions as long as they do not give the impression he is speaking in his official capacity as a Marine.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? After declaring victories in getting federal and state officials to investigate the case of an unarmed black teenager shot to death by a neighborhood watch captain, civil rights leaders continued to pressure authorities to make an arrest.

At a town hall meeting Tuesday evening in Sanford, Fla., where the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin took place last month, officials from the NAACP, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Nation of Islam urged residents to remain calm but demand that the shooter, George Zimmerman, be arrested.

Zimmerman has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting and has said he shot Martin, who was returning to a gated community in the city after buying candy at a convenience store, in self-defense after Martin attacked him. Police said Zimmerman is white; his family says he is Hispanic.

"I stand here as a son, father, uncle who is tired of being scared for our boys," said Benjamin Jealous, national president of the NAACP. "I'm tired of telling our young men how they can't dress, where they can't go and how they can't behave."

The case has ignited a furor against the police department of this Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott's office Tuesday. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to "address tension in the community."

Earlier in the week, the federal agency opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and in Florida, Seminole County State Attorney Norm Wolfinger said a grand jury will meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

"We are pleased the Department of Justice has heeded our calls and agreed to investigate this outrageous case," Jealous said in an emailed statement Tuesday. "The rules of justice in this nation have failed when an innocent teenage boy can be shot to death by a vigilante and no arrest is made for weeks."

At the town hall meeting, more than 350 people packed into the Allen Chapel AME Church, which is located in a traditionally black neighborhood of Sanford. People jumped to their feet and cheered when local NAACP leader Turner Clayton Jr. said the federal Justice Department should not only review the investigation but also take over the Sanford Police Department.

Other civil rights leaders said the city's police chief should step down.

"This is just the beginning of what is taking place," Clayton said. "We're going to make sure justice prevails."

When The Associated Press tried to reach the police department Tuesday evening for comment, a dispatcher told a reporter to call in the morning.

Earlier Tuesday, an attorney for Martin's family revealed the teenager told his girlfriend just moments before he was killed that he was being followed.

"'Oh he's right behind me, he's right behind me again,'" 17-year-old Trayvon Martin told his girlfriend on his cellphone, attorney Benjamin Crump said.

The girl later heard Martin say, "Why are you following me?" Another man asked, "What are you doing around here?'" Crump said.

Crump told reporters Tuesday Martin cried out when a man bearing a 9mm handgun came at him. Police said Zimmerman, who was found bleeding from his nose and the back of his head, told authorities he yelled out for help before shooting Martin.

"She absolutely blows Zimmerman's absurd self-defense claim out of the water," Crump said of Martin's girlfriend, whose name was withheld.

Martin, who was in town from Miami to visit his father in Sanford, called his 16-year-old girlfriend in Miami several times on Feb. 26, including just before the shooting, Crump said. The discovery of the lengthy conversations, including one moments before the shooting, was made over the weekend by Martin's father, who checked his son's cell phone log, Crump said.

The teenager told the girl on his way back from the store he'd taken shelter from the rain briefly at an apartment building in his father's gated community, Crump said. Martin then told her he was being followed and would try to lose the person, Crump said.

"She says: 'Run.' He says, 'I'm not going to run, I'm just going to walk fast,'" Crump said, quoting the girl.

After Martin encountered Zimmerman, the girl thought she heard a scuffle "because his voice changes like something interrupted his speech," Crump said. The phone call ended before the girl heard gunshots.

The last call was at 7:12 p.m. Police arrived at 7:17 p.m. to find Martin lying face down on the ground.

Zimmerman was handcuffed after police arrived and taken into custody for questioning, but was released by police without being charged. Police have interviewed Zimmerman twice since then.

Crump called the treatment patently unfair and asked if Martin would have received the same treatment if he had been the shooter.

"We will not rest until he is arrested. The more time that passes, this is going to be swept under the rug," Crump said.

Crump said he plans to turn over information about the call to federal investigators; a grand jury in Seminole County is also likely to subpoena the records. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the state case.

Former federal prosecutors said there are limitations to a Justice Department civil rights probe, which typically would involve a sworn law enforcement officer accused of abusing his authority.

In this case, they said, it's not clear whether Zimmerman had any actual law enforcement authority or if the Sanford Police Department did anything improper. Zimmerman had a permit to carry a gun, but it was not required for his neighborhood watch patrol.

"I think the community has the feeling that there's some type of cover-up," said Jeffrey Sloman, former U.S. attorney in Miami. "At least the department's involvement makes sure it gets some review. He wasn't a police officer. I'm sure that this is going to be a tough case to prosecute."

Authorities may be hamstrung by a state "Stand Your Ground" law that allows people to defend themselves with deadly force and does not require a retreat in the face of danger. Asked Tuesday if that law needs change, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said "it's always positive to go back and think about existing laws."

During the town hall meeting in Sanford, Florida Rep. Geraldine Thompson promised the law's repeal would be a top priority for the state legislature's black caucus.

"If vigilante justice becomes the norm, will visitors feel comfortable coming to our state?" she said.

An online petition urging local authorities to prosecute Zimmerman had drawn more than 700,000 signatures at website Change.org as of early Wednesday. About 50 defense attorneys and protesters filled the lobby in the governor's office Tuesday to deliver a letter seeking an independent investigation and a task force to study racial profiling. They applauded when Scott came out of his office to talk to them.

"I will make sure justice prevails," Scott said. "I'm very comfortable that (state law enforcement) is going to do the right thing. They're not going to let somebody do something wrong and get away with it."
