Jenny Block: It's Hard Not to Feel Free with Olivia Travel

I used to go to an all-girls summer camp when I was a kid. I loved it. No boys other than at the camp socials. So we could be our silly, unfettered selves, playing and laughing like the little girls we used to be and sometimes still wished we were.

Camp Louise offered a million activities, crafts and sports and shows and swimming and dances. I could never seem to fit it all in. But I loved trying. I loved the long days and the late nights. But more than anything, I loved the camaraderie, the friendship, the all-for-one-and-one-for-all stuff that didn't seem to exist anywhere else in the world.

It wasn't until I was an adult that I discovered it does still exist. And, interestingly, it was created by a woman who was after the same thing I was: a place where one could "feel free." Judy Dlugacz started Olivia Records 30 years ago so that women would have a place to feel free to record and produce their music.

In 1990, she started Olivia Travel so that women could feel free to be themselves when they traveled and not have to hide who they loved and how they lived. It started out with one cruise. Now it's year after year of cruises and resorts and exotic trips to places like the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, Africa, and Tahiti.

I recently returned from the Olivia Western Caribbean Cruise, aboard Holland America's ms Ryndam, that began in Tampa, Fla. and then traveled to Cozumel, Mexico; Roat?n, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Costa Maya, Mexico. Each port meant a new adventure. We snorkeled in Cozumel and on Roat?n and went ziplining in the rain forest in Costa Maya.

Those excursions were amazing: a beautiful sail on the Fury Catamaran to our snorkeling destination and then to a private beach in Mexico; a journey to Upachaya, an eco-resort on Roat?n that offers a multi-stop snorkeling tour; and a trek through the treetops at a very nice clip in Costa Maya at BioMaya.

But as much as I loved those outings, what I loved even more was the community of Olivia. Don't get me wrong. I love men. And my day-to-day life is full of wonderful men. And I don't need my life to be 100-percent LGBT all of the time either. Variety is the spice of life and all of that.

And yet it was -- OK, I'm going to say it -- downright magical to be aboard that ship with all those women, nearly 100-percent of whom were lesbians (not a requirement, by the way). There was an incredible level of respect and understanding for the lives we lead and the struggles we face and the battles we have won.

There's no question about whether or not it's safe to kiss your partner or hold hands. No one assumes you're traveling with your sister. (OK, there was that one guy in the restaurant in Cozumel. But he was perfectly polite about it.) And asking for one king-sized bed in your cabin raises neither eyebrows nor ire. It was lovely, really.

And then, just like summer camp, as well, the days and nights were packed with activities and shows. You can play bingo or learn to two-step. You can sing karaoke or try your hand at bridge. You can enter the morning trivia contest in the library. (My girlfriend won three times!) Or you can partake in the pool games, gamble in the casino, lounge in the sun (or shade), shop, and even learn to make those towel animals that the stewards always leave for you in the cabin at night.

Of course, you can also just read or play Scrabble, or, heck, you can sleep in and order room service all week and only come out to play at night. And there is plenty to do at night, with shows ranging from comedy with Kate Clinton, Julie Goldman, Vickie Shaw, and Gina Yashere to The Oldyweds Newlyweds Game Show to Olivia Idol. And then, of course, there's dancing till the crack of dawn at Club O.

The food is great. The drinks are fruity. And even when the weather isn't so great, no one seems to really care, because, once again, it's all about being at sea with a bunch of like-minded folks whom you've never met but who would go out of their way to help you in any way. How's that for a nice way to live, even if only for a week?

There's also some good work being done. Massive amounts of donations for the Roat?n Children's Fund were collected, and some big bucks were also rounded up to help with Obama's reelection campaign. The women onboard were some of the smartest, most interesting people I've ever met. Olivia draws a top-notch crowd. Women from all over the world come together to take these trips. This cruise had a major Aussie contingent and lots of women from Canada, as well.

One of the other things that really impresses me about Olivia is their Solos program. It takes a brave person to go on a cruise alone, and Olivia does an amazing job of setting up mixers and reserving tables at meals and orchestrating excursions. Will you meet the love of your life? Who knows. But I do know that every Solo I met made a ton of friends and had a great time.

Next year's a big one for Olivia, their 40th anniversary. They're celebrating with two Caribbean cruises, each loaded with famous entertainers, including musicians from the early days of Olivia Records, as well as the performers from this cruise and a number of other well-known musicians and comedians. I have no idea how they'll pack it all into one week. But I have no doubt that they'll do it.

I cried every year when my parents came to pick me up from Camp Louise. And I cried as we disembarked the ship. It isn't that I want to run away from the real world forever. It's just that I wish the real world would take a few notes from Olivia. It would be nice if every day, every person, no matter their race or sexual orientation, no matter the size of their paycheck or the size of their body, could, well, feel free.

Call this ancient rock carving 'little horny man'

A stick figure man with a giant phallus dubbed "the little horny man" by its discoverers is the oldest rock carving found yet in the Americas, researchers say.

These findings might shed new light on when the New World was first settled, scientists added.

The time frame during which humans first reached the Americas remains hotly debated. One key to settling this controversy would involve uncovering early examples of human artifacts, such as art.

Scientists discovered one ancient sample of such art in a cave named Lapa do Santo in central-eastern Brazil. The region is home to Luzia, the oldest human skeleton found to date in South America.

Lapa do Santo is one of the largest rock shelters excavated yet in the region, a limestone cave covering an area of about 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters). Here, researchers have found buried human remains, tools made of stone and bone, ash from hearths, and leftovers from meals of fruit and small game.

In 2009, digging about 13 feet (4 meters) below the surface, the scientists found a rock carving or petroglyph of a man packed into the side of the cave. The figure, which appears to be squatting with his arms outstretched, is about 12 inches (30 centimeters) tall from head to feet and about 8 inches (20 centimeters) wide.

"We discovered this petroglyph in the final moments of excavation at the site," said researcher Walter Alves Neves, an archaeologist and biological anthropologist at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

The engraving is also depicted with a relatively oversized phallus about 2 inches (5 cm) long, or about as long as the man's left arm.

"We named the figure 'the little horny man,'" Neves said.

"The figure is probably linked to some kind of fertility ritual," Neves told LiveScience.

"There is another site in the same region where you find paintings with men with oversized phalluses, and also pregnant women, and even a parturition (childbirth) scene."

Carbon dating and other tests of the sediment covering the petroglyph suggest the engraving dates between 9,000 and 12,000 years old.

This makes it the oldest reliably dated instance of such rock art found yet in the Americas.

When this carving is compared with other examples of early rock art found in South America, it would seem that abstract forms of thinking may have been very diverse back then, which suggests that humans settled the New World relatively early, giving their art time to diversify.

For instance, at one site in Argentina named Cueva de las Manos, paintings of hands predominate, while at another site there, Cueva Epullan Grande, engravings have geometric motifs.

    1. Ancient Maya doom teaches lesson about climate shifts

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Researchers say the Classic Maya civilization was done in by relatively modest droughts, suggesting that similarly modest climate shifts could have a dramatic effect in the future.

    2. 25 million tons of tsunami debris tracked
    3. New tests should settle faster-than-light claims
    4. Pregnant monkeys miscarry, avoid infanticide

"It shows that about 11,000 years ago, there was already a very diverse manifestation of rock art in South America, so man probably arrived in the Americas much earlier than normally is accepted," Neves said.

The scientists detailed their findings online Wednesday 22 in the journal PLoS ONE.

George Hamilton in spotlight, looking for a tan (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? George Hamilton moves from story to story, one more outrageous than the next.

There is no theme to tie them together but he's having such a good time telling them, you just let him roll on.

"I'm on the Concorde flying from London with Kirk Douglas and he says, 'George, I've never seen you this pale. I don't even know you.' So I go into the bathroom with this bronzer and I put on a coat every half hour.

"Three and half hours later we're in New York and I'm looking like Sidney Poitier. Kirk looks at me and says, 'You're the darkest person I've ever seen. How did that happen?' I said, 'Tricks of the trade, pal.'"

Whether he's talking about his trademark tan, his rich history with Hollywood's elite, or his most recent role on tour with stage show "La Cage Aux Folles," Hamilton commands the spotlight.

He laughs, he waves his hands, and rarely completes three sentences without launching into a story so improbable, it's hard to tell if he's serious.

Hamilton bursts into a yarn about playing cards with poker champions Pug Pearson and Doyle Brunson, saying he was so nervous his body language would reveal his hand, that he never looked at his cards.

"Well, I won once or twice because they didn't know what I had. Then again I didn't either!" he said sporting a wide grin backstage at Washington's Kennedy Center, where "La Cage" just completed a run.

Hamilton receives top billing in the musical but freely admits the heavy lifting is being done by two-time Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber.

Hollywood actor Hamilton has been blistered by some critics during the tour but insists he takes it in stride.

"First and foremost, every few years I'll take on something that I know is really challenging, something that may be past my ability to do," Hamilton said. "And I open myself up to it because if you don't, you don't know and you don't grow.

"And you have to be prepared to take the knocks for that."

NO DIVA

Sieber said he loves working alongside the 72-year-old, Memphis-born Hamilton.

"If he was a terrible diva, I would be gone by now," he said. "But he's so terrific. And such a generous soul. There is not a mean bone in his body. He's so self-deprecating.

"I've never seen anybody work so hard. Everytime he's off-stage, he's back in his book making sure that he knows his lines. Every single show."

Sieber plays Albin in the new production of the 1983 Jerry Herman/Harvey Fierstein musical after playing Hamilton's role, Georges, on Broadway. It's a good thing, said Sieber, because he was able to help Hamilton during the opening of the tour.

"In the beginning it was a little bit of a ventriloquist act," he said. "I would not move my lips and tell him the line. I was also grabbing him and pulling him and pushing him into the right spots. But he's gotten so much better now."

Hamilton, a bachelor since 1975, enjoys life whether he's stumbling through TV show "Dancing with the Stars," sifting through acting roles that continually come his way, or just sitting back and telling stories to anyone who will listen.

He admits to being compulsive.

"I'll jump out of an airplane and I'll think, 'Maybe I should have brought a parachute. That would have been a good idea,'" he said.

And, of course, he has no problem talking about his perpetual tan.

"I remember once in London in the midst of winter, I was at the Grosvenor House and I decided I was going to get a tan no matter what," he said. "The clouds would come and there would be sun for about eight minutes, and I figured if I stayed there long enough, I could get a really good tan.

"To do it, I had to lift up the window on the third floor and climb partly out onto the ledge. And I'm perched on this ledge, and an old woman looks up and says, 'What's he doing? Is he trying to jump? What are you doing up there?'

"I thought, 'Why don't you just go away? I'm trying to get a tan.'

"She doesn't stop. 'Everybody, come here. Look at him. He's going to jump,'" Hamilton adds in a Cockney accent.

A crowd gathered before he was able to shoo them away.

Although he sported a rich tan while running through a series of Kennedy Center interviews, Hamilton, impeccably attired in a dark blue suit, dark tie, and pinstriped shirt, insisted he was "bleached out."

"I peeled once and underneath it there was a tan from 1959 there," he said. "Which reminds me of a time I was in Paris..."

Greece says has cleared hurdles to bailout (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greek party leaders have met the final two demands set by the country's international lenders to seal a bailout, paving the way for a deal and an agreement to ease its debt burden to be announced on Monday, Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said.

Venizelos told reporters late on Wednesday that the cabinet had decided how to plug a 325 million euro gap in the 3.3 billion euros of extra budget savings this year which the EU and IMF are demanding in return for the 130 billion euro rescue.

Likewise he noted that the leaders of both parties in the government of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos had given written undertakings to implement the austerity measures, which provoked serious rioting on the streets of Athens last Sunday.

Exasperated euro zone finance ministers in the Eurogroup had demanded both issues be settled before making a final decision on the bailout, Greece's second since 2010.

With mistrust of Athens high, EU sources told Reuters euro zone officials had considered whether it was possible to delay part or all of the rescue deal while still avoiding a disorderly default.

Greece needs the funds to avoid bankruptcy when 14.5 billion euros of debt repayments fall due on March 20.

"The big issue of the 325 million euros has been finalized and this helped the discussion," Venizelos said following a lengthy telephone conference call with his euro zone peers.

The Eurogroup had been due to meet in Brussels but its Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker scaled this down to a teleconference, complaining that Greek political leaders had failed to provide written commitments or plug the savings gap.

Greek party leaders have a reputation for working right up to deadlines, or beyond them, raising tensions with the Eurogroup which fears that they will avoid implementing the austerity package in full after elections expected in April.

However, conservative leader Antonis Samaras, the front runner to become the next prime minister, provided his written undertaking to the EU and IMF on Wednesday shortly before the Eurogroup conference call. Socialist leader George Papandreou wrote a similar letter.

Venizelos said he hoped euro zone officials could tie up all the issues before the ministerial Eurogroup meets on Monday, opening the way for a bond swap deal with Greece's private creditors, known as PSI, which will reduce its debt mountain.

"These issues will be prepared at a Euro Working Group meeting on Sunday in Brussels so that, with good faith, the final decision for the approval of the (bailout) program is taken and the public announcement of the PSI is made on Monday," he said.

Greece had said it must initiate a debt swap deal with private sector bondholders by Friday to meet a March 20 deadline for the 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments. It was hoping to have the euro zone's backing for its second bailout this week. If that backing now comes on Monday, it is possible the debt swap could start in the middle of next week.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

FEW DETAILS

After the three-hour conference call among the 17 euro zone ministers, Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker issued a statement saying progress had been made, but provided few details.

He said the European Central Bank, IMF and European Commission had completed a report into Greece's debt sustainability - a precondition for approving the bailout - and that he expected the Eurogroup to be able to take the necessary decisions on Athens at the next meeting on Monday.

"Further considerations are necessary regarding the specific mechanisms to strengthen the surveillance of program implementation and to ensure that priority is given to debt servicing," he said.

"On the basis of the elements that are currently on the table and the above-mentioned additional input, I am confident that the Eurogroup will be able to take all the necessary decisions on Monday 20 February."

Samaras, whose New Democracy party is ahead in the polls, delivered his letter of undertaking earlier on Wednesday.

"If New Democracy wins the next election in Greece, we will remain committed to the program's objectives, targets and key policies," Samaras wrote.

But he insisted the fast-shrinking Greek economy must also be kickstarted into life and reserved the right to adapt details of the package accordingly - a hedge that could prove a sticking point for increasingly frustrated euro zone partners.

"Prioritizing recovery along with the other objectives will only make the program more effective and the adjustment effort more successful. Therefore ... policy modifications might be required to guarantee the full program's implementation," he wrote.

STRONG DOUBTS

EU sources said some in the euro zone doubted the commitment of Greece's leaders to austerity, and queried whether it would be enough to bring Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio down from 160 percent now to a target of 120 percent by 2020.

"There are proposals to delay the Greek package or to split it, so that an immediate default is avoided, but not everything is committed to," one official briefed on preparations for the euro zone finance ministers' call told Reuters.

"There is pressure from several countries to hold off until there is a concrete commitment from Greece, which may not come until after they've held elections."

Samaras' belated commitment to honor the austerity plan may have put that plan on the back burner, even if concerns linger.

"With every small piece of news that we get from Athens, the situation is becoming better," said an EU diplomat. Whether it will hold all the way through, we can't know."

After a series of broken promises since Athens was first bailed out in May 2010, trust is in short supply.

"When you look at the internal political discussions in Greece and the opinion polls, then you have to ask who will really guarantee after the elections ... that Greece will stand by what we are now agreeing with Greece," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told SWR2 radio.

Greece's President Karolos Papoulias, who holds a largely ceremonial role, fought back, saying in a speech: "Who is Mr Schaeuble to insult Greece? Who are the Dutch? Who are the Finnish?"

European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said approval by the Eurogroup at regular talks next Monday would allow a sovereign debt swap to be completed in time.

"If the Eurogroup (of euro zone finance ministers) is able to make a positive political decision next Monday, the bond swap with voluntary PSI (private sector involvement) can immediately begin and be completed in time," he told Reuters.

Greece is well on its way to suffering one of the biggest slumps of modern history. Output has contracted 16 percent from its peak in 2008 and the cuts will inevitably make that worse.

Papademos has said that failure to back the bailout would consign Greece to economic catastrophe.

But with many Greeks suffering huge cuts in their living standards and young people burning and wrecking almost 100 Athens buildings in one night on Sunday, some people believe the catastrophe is already under way.

Roanoke Times Story Features FranNet Franchisee Rosen | Starting ...

A recent story in The Roanoke Times uses a former delivery truck driver-turned-yogurt franchise owner to illustrate what we at FranNet have been experiencing for the last few years now ? professionals who change careers in middle age and turn to franchising as a means to a more secure future. The International Franchise Association projects that the franchise industry will add 14,000 new units and 168,000 new jobs in 2012, so Cary Broome is at the crest of a significant employment trend. The story?s author, Amanda Codispoti, interviewed FranNet of Virginia owner Heather Rosen for some critical insight into the franchise industry (and we can?t imagine a better source!). Here?s the story:

Employees fill out paperwork during a staff meeting.

Cary Broome worked for 24 years as a United Postal Service delivery driver.

Now 53, he?s retired and he and his wife have decided to take on a new endeavor. They are opening a franchised self-serve frozen yogurt shop, at Hunting Hills Plaza in Roanoke next to Kohl?s. They expect to open Feb. 17.

The couple have poured their savings and stocks into the business, a move that makes them somewhat worried given the economy. But Broome said he believes that opening a franchise is less risky than starting their own business.

?It?s really scary to me because we don?t have any business experience,? he said. ?That?s why we chose a franchise.?

Franchising offers first-time business owners guidance, support and a proven business model.

And in today?s economy, starting a business can provide more stability than a job in corporate America. Franchises in particular can be see as lower risk.

?For a lot of people, it?s really their only hope,? said Heather Rosen, a Virginia-based consultant for FranNet, which offers advice and education to potential franchisees.

?What I?m hearing from people is that, ?My job isn?t stable. I need more income security,? ? Rosen said.

A report by research firm IHS Global Insight conducted for the International Franchise Association estimates that after three years of decline, the number of franchises will grow this year by 1.9 percent, from an estimated 735,571 establishments in 2011 to 749,499 businesses this year.

The forecasted growth also means more jobs. The report estimates that new franchises will contribute to 168,000 new jobs, an increase from last year.

James Gillula, managing director for IHS Global Insight, said that the projected growth of franchise business is slightly behind that of independent business, but that job growth in franchising is ahead.

?One of the primary reasons is that access to credit, while improving, continues to hinder growth in parts of the franchise sector,? he said.

For instance, the lodging sector is expected to see 3.1 percent growth, according to the report. Franchises that fall in the retail products and services sector will see only 0.1 percent growth. Retail food franchises are expected to grow by 0.9 percent.

In addition to tight lending, the decline in franchises the past three years is also attributed to lower levels of consumer spending.

But consumer spending grew slightly in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the IFA expects it to continue to grow this year.

Franchise or independent?

When you start a franchise business, you?re in business for yourself, but not by yourself ? that?s the franchising catch phrase that hooked Broome when he was exploring the idea of opening a franchise.

?We don?t have any experience,? Broome said. ?We?ve never run our own business.?

He and his wife, who works in human resources, wanted to open the frozen yogurt store to diversify their income, Broome said. He also wanted to be part of the community, he said, and to have an opportunity to teach his two daughters about work ethic.

Ambitious Oman targets 12 million visitors by 2020, announce ...

Besides Oman's legendary hospitality, its pristine beaches and unspoiled Wadis, the high profile Royal Opera House Muscat debuted in October last year, and the country is now pushing ahead with projects including a $1bn tourist resort in Salalah and a $1bn Oman Conference and Exhibition Centre in Muscat, which is due to open late 2013.

"Oman received some 1.6 million tourists in 2010 and Oman's Ministry of Tourism aims to increase this figure to an ambitious 12 million per annum by 2020. Such aspirations clearly show the country's goal to develop as a major tourist and business destination," said Mark Walsh, Group Exhibition Director, Reed Travel Exhibitions.

Consistent with Oman's bullish forecast for tourism and its bold infrastructure strategy, online visitor registrations for ATM from Oman have risen 131% while the number of visitors interested in buying products and services from the Sultanate is up 109%.

Overall online registrations for the four-day show, which opens on 30 April 2012, are already up 132% from the same time last year, at nearly 2,000 visitors with key exhibitors from the Sultanate including the country's Ministry of Tourism and Oman Air.

Muscat's cruise ship passenger arrivals sailed past 230,000 in 2010/2011 from just 44,000 in 2007. The Ministry of Tourism expects this number to exceed 300,000 by 2015. Meanwhile, 2010 saw a record 2.08 million passengers arriving at Muscat International Airport, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Meanwhile elsewhere, European pre-registrations for the event have risen 94%. The number of tourists visiting the Middle East is expected to grow by up to 5% this year following an 8% decline last year, according to a recent report by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). There were an estimated five million fewer international tourist arrivals last year, down to 55 million, due to the turmoil in some of the region's countries, UNWTO said.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai and approaching its nineteenth year, the show has grown to become the largest showcase of its kind in the region and one of the biggest in the world. Last year 2,232 exhibitors covering floor space of just under 20,000 square metres attracted more than 22,000 attendees.

The line-up for this year's Arabian Travel Market will bring together annual favourites and a number of brand new events including the inaugural UNWTO regional tourism ministers' conference and the WTM Vision forum, which will focus on Middle East travel trends and the online travel market.

Covering the entire week, the popular Seminar Theatre series of sessions will address industry hot topics from developments in the aviation sector and hotel branding to Sharia-compliant travel.

The all-new Tech Theatre is a dedicated platform that provides an opportunity to gain invaluable insight into leading edge industry-related technologies including social media and GDS.

For the second year running, Arabian Travel Market will once again host its own unique industry version of The Apprentice to uncover the best emerging regional talent.

Other regular features include the New Frontiers Award, which recognises outstanding contributions to tourism development in the face of overwhelming adversity, and the perennially popular industry Careers Day will wrap up the week.
