Gameloft sale prices Android games at $0.99 starting Thursday (Digital Trends)

gameloftAndroid gamers, you?re getting some post-Christmas attention from Gameloft. The French game developer says it will be knocking down the price of all its games to a paltry .99 cents.

So that means that those of you stuck with poorly planned New Years Eve events can download some decent distractions. The deal begins December 29 at 10:00AM Pacific time, and lasts until January 5 of the new year.

All of their games, which typically average at $5, are .99 cents; this includes Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation and most likely the popular Gangstar, 9mm, Order & Chaos, N.O.V.A and the Oregon Trail remake. The developer also has a few free games if you?re in the neighborhood already, as well as a current contest for a free Modern Combat 3 copy.

The massive discount extends the love already bestowed upon the iOS users as well as the Amazon Appstore earlier this month. The Amazon sale was Christmas oriented, and ended on Monday of this week.

The Android Market generosity extends to those across the pond as well. UK dwellers will actually be getting it for a little more than us according to Recombu, Gameloft Android games will be going for 69p. However, it?s not clear if all the games will be available at 69p for those in the UK.

Gameloft is in the habit of creating console-like experiences for mobile users. The company?s iOS activity has been significant, reaching a 200 million download milestone from the App Store back in July. Gameloft was also connected to the Sony Tablet S and the Tablet P to create an interesting lineup of games. Android and iOS gaming in general has been growing tremendously, recently beating out the revenue of traditional gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo.

Android and iOS share a merry little Christmas: seven million total device activations

Google's SVP of Mobile just provided us with another glimpse inside the horse's mouth, claiming that Android scored 3.7 million new device activations over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. To put that in context, Flurry reported that total Android and iOS activations on Christmas Day alone totaled 6.8 million. If we can accept a very high margin of error, and if we assume that the vast majority of Rubin's activations were on the 25th, then we might extrapolate a roughly even split between the two rival platforms. Considering where Android was just a couple of Christmas's ago, it's no wonder that Mr Rubin is in the tweeting mood.

Steelers QB Roethlisberger out against Rams (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not start Saturday when the Steelers face the St. Louis Rams.

Roethlisberger is dealing with a sprained left ankle and did not practice this week following a 20-3 loss to San Francisco on Monday. He will be replaced by veteran Charlie Batch, who is 4-2 as a spot starter since joining the Steelers in 2003.

Roethlisberger said Wednesday he would prefer to play and believed his ankle was in pretty good shape after throwing for 330 yards and three interceptions against the 49ers. Yet he watched both practices this week in sweat pants as Batch took the snaps with the first team.

Roethlisberger last missed a start due to injury in 2009, when a concussion forced him to sit out a loss to Baltimore.

Troops hit protesters marching into Yemen capital (AP)

SANAA, Yemen ? Troops commanded by relatives of Yemen's outgoing president attacked a crowd of more than 100,000 protesters peacefully marching into the capital Saturday, killing at least nine and driving the president to promise to leave the country.

Yielding to pressure to defuse the country's turmoil, president Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he would leave for the United States after forces overseen by his son and nephew opened fire on the protesters.

They had marched for four days and 200 miles on foot to pressure the government not to give Saleh immunity from prosecution, in the first march of its kind in the impoverished nation that is home to a dangerous al-Qaida offshoot. After protesters arrived at the southern entrances to the capital, forces of the elite Republican Guard fired on them with automatic weapons, tear gas and water cannons, sparking hours of clashes.

The violence illustrated the confusion in Yemen caused by the slow-motion exit of Saleh from power after 33 years of rule.

After entrenching for months against massive protests across the country demanding his ouster, the president signed a deal in late November handing over his powers to the vice president and committing to leave office in return for immunity.

But Saleh retains his title and remains in the presidential palace, lauded as "his excellency the president" by state media controlled by his supporters.

Opponents say he has continued to wield influence through his relatives and loyalists who still hold powerful positions, undermining Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. That has raised fears that Saleh was looking for a way to continue to rule, even as a national unity government prepares for presidential elections set for February.

The Republican Guard forces, led by Saleh's son Ahmed, and Central Security troops, led by his nephew, have defied orders from Hadi that they pull back from positions in the streets of the capital, even up to a Saturday deadline.

Saleh had been expected to leave Yemen soon after he signed the U.S.- and Saudi-backed accord, ostensibly to undergo treatment for wounds suffered in an assassination attempt in June. But officials say he has stalled on leaving.

Hours after the fighting erupted in Sanaa, Saleh told reporters at his palace that he would leave "in the coming days" for the U.S.

"Not for treatment, but to get out of sight and the media to calm the atmosphere for the unity government to hold the presidential election," he said.

He said he would eventually return and pursue "political work as an opposition figure."

Government officials said ambassadors from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council had been in contact with Saleh in the past week to pressure him to leave. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

There was no immediate confirmation from American officials that Saleh would come to the U.S., though Yemeni officials said he had received a visa.

The protesters, who have been massing by the millions around the country since February, oppose an accord for Saleh's exit because it would grant him immunity and because it keeps many of his regime figures in place.

Saturday's "March of Life" demanded Saleh be put on trial for the killings of protesters during his crackdown on the uprising. The crowds marched from Taiz, a city that has been a major opposition center 170 miles (270 kilometers) to the south of Sanaa.

The marchers Saturday were trying to pass down a main avenue where the presidential palace is located when they were met by Republican Guard and Central Security forces, backed by tanks. Troops fired on the crowd, who responded by throwing stones.

The fighting stopped after several hours when the loyalist forces allowed the protesters to continue their march into Sanaa. Amid the clashes, Hadi issued orders for the troops to step aside, but government officials said they only obeyed after international ambassadors contacted Saleh's son Ahmed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the behind-the-scenes efforts.

At least eight protesters, including a woman, were killed and more than 200 injured, including 61 wounded by gunfire, according to two doctors at a protesters' field hospital, Mohammed el-Qoutbi and Sadeq el-Shogaa.

In all, at least 500,000 protesters had joined the march by the time it reached Change Square, according to activists. A smaller group broke away and marched on the presidential palace, where troops opened fire on them, killing a ninth protester and wounding four more, activist Abdel-Karim el-Khaywani said.

The violence sparked Prime Minister Mohammed Basindwa to ask a committee to investigate.

"The prime minister called on the Defense and Interior ministers to create an investigative committee into what happened and how protesters were killed," said Information Minister Ali el-Emrani. "The results of the investigation will be shown to the prime minister for the correct course of action."

A human rights organization appeared to lay responsibility on Saleh and the new unity government.

"The shooting of peaceful demonstrators by forces under the control of President Saleh and his top commanders is further proof that promises of immunity encourage rather than deter illegal attacks," Letta Tayler, Human Rights Watch Yemen researcher, said in a statement Saturday.

"Systematic or widespread unlawful killings, carried out as a state policy, are likely to be crimes against humanity," she added.

Even if Saleh carries out his promise to leave, his loyalists remain in place. The unity government is split between opposition parties and Saleh's Congress Party, which holds the powerful defense, oil and foreign affairs ministries. A military committee that Hadi heads to manage military affairs also includes the Congress Party.

There is also confusion over when Saleh is supposed to formally leave as president.

According to the deal signed Nov. 23, the parliament was supposed to convene 29 days later to approve immunity for Saleh; on the next day, he would step down. But parliament has not formally taken up the issue. Some lawmakers say that the "mechanisms" for the deal give them until the February presidential election to grant immunity.

Parliament convened for the first time Saturday since March but did not discuss immunity. Instead it discussed the program of the national unity government, headed by Basindwa, a veteran independent politician. The body can not take action by majority vote; it must reach consensus between Congress Party lawmakers and the opposition.

In past weeks, Saleh loyalists have repeatedly worked counter to Hadi.

Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, a veteran of Saleh's regime, rejected a U.N. request to send a human rights fact-finding team to Yemen, without consulting with Hadi. When he learned about the incident, Hadi gave his approval.

Last week, the Military Committee ordered the removal of the top military commander in Taiz for the killings of protesters there. But the governor of Taiz, a Saleh loyalist, did not carry out the order.

Corrected: Zhang, Bale blossom together on "Flowers of War" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? In 100 years of Chinese film, "The Flowers of War" is the first major title to feature a western movie star. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for best foreign language film, and is China's entry for Oscars.

Budgeted at $100 million, "Flowers of War" stars Oscar-winner Christian Bale as John Miller, an opportunist mortician on the run in 1937 as the Japanese are invading the province of Nanking, now known as Nanjing. The Japanese occupation led to the deaths of thousands of Chinese citizens and came to be known by some as the Rape of Nanking or the Nanjing Massacre.

In the film, which has a limited U.S. release this week before opening nationwide in 2012, Bale's character must save a group of schoolgirls from the clutches of the Japanese. At the same time, he falls in love with a Chinese courtesan.

Bale and Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who communicated through an interpreter while making the film, talked with Reuters about overcoming cultural barriers and revisiting an infamous episode of China's past. (The interview took place before Bale's recent run-in with Chinese officials.)

Q: This is your first time working with a western film star. Did the collaboration meet or defy your expectations?

Zhang: "First, I'm amazed at how low key and humble Christian is. The stereotype that Chinese have of Hollywood actors is they probably have an entourage and assistants. So that's definitely changed how I viewed Hollywood actors. And also Christian didn't want to stay in a five star hotel either. He lived right above me, lived with everybody else, with the crew members. And another thing is Christian gave up his weekends to work with us because we work seven days a week."

Bale: "But this seven-day week schedule became something I quite enjoyed cause I liked the momentum. Yimou is top dog in his profession, and he genuinely seemed to have a great deal of humor and laughter on the set. I didn't always know what the laughter was about but I would laugh with them. I hope they're not all laughing at me! I felt surrounded by good friends and even if I didn't understand nuances of what was being discussed, I got the essence in the presence of people."

Q: Do you find that your shared experience in filmmaking was enough to communicate despite the language barrier?

Bale: "There would be moments where Yimou would come to me and we would work it out between the two of us. And sometimes with a scene it's very small adjustments that were being asked for and I could understand from body language. And I always was convinced Yimou spoke a little bit of English, more than he ever let onto. So we'd experiment and see how it works out and sometimes it did and sometimes it didn't."

Q: How are Western actors different than Chinese?

Zhang: "Each line Christian offered three or four different ways, which is very unusual because Chinese actors normally cannot pull that off. Screening the film for a western audience I realized that the first one-third of the movie, audiences would laugh at Christian's lines. That actually surprised me because when I wrote the script in Chinese, I didn't think that was humorous, but clearly Christian added other layers to it."

Q: I understand Zhang asked you to stand before the cast and give them acting tips but it proved awkward.

Bale: "I always think it's bad to try to alter anybody else's experience. Apart from that, it's not my job. That's the director's job. And I love very much working with actors who either have no experience or very little experience. I like to try to avoid getting any technique into my acting because I feel like the more known an actor gets, you really have to be exceptional to maintain that feeling of freshness and vitality and enthusiasm instead of falling back on your usual tricks."

Q: Steven Spielberg recommended you for the part after working with you years ago on "Empire of the Sun" when you were a child. Did working with kids on this movie take you back?

Bale: "Some of the girls would say to me, 'I would never want to act ever again in my life, this is it.' And I would say to them, 'That's what I said. That's exactly what I said when I was your age.' The thing that I liked so much was the freshness that they brought in terms of this is something new but there's no consideration of this being anything that they would continue with."

Q: The movie is set around an atrocity by the Japanese that rivals in brutality what the Nazis did in Europe. Why do you think the world hasn't held the Japanese accountable?

Zhang: "Maybe the international community doesn't know much about Nanjing because China, at that time, was really far behind, and they didn't have enough voice or power to actually speak out for themselves. For me, rather than arouse sad feelings, the goal of the movie is to make people see the good side of humanity and bring peaceful feelings to an audience."

Military Experiments on Fruitcake (Part 1: 1981)

During the 1970s and 1980s the US military conducted a series of tests on fruitcake, the long-lasting holiday comestible. They issued at least two reports. Here?s a look at the first report:

?Nutritionally Fortified Fruitcake (Thermoprocessed, Flexibly Packaged) Developed for Shuttle Flight Use,? T. Branagan, NATICK/TR-82/004, June 1981. (AD A129 878).

The report features these lyrical passages:

NASA asked Natick Laboratories to develop a contingency ration that would meet and retain 100 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and maintain consumer acceptability under ambient storage conditions for three years. NASA chose flexibly packaged fruitcake, a single food, as the approach to this ration. The desired fruitcake was to be nutritionally complete, meeting the 1968 RDA for males 22-35 years of age (700 grams supplying 2800 calories, 65 grams protein, nine vitamins and at least four minerals). The fruitcake was fortified with vitamins (A, C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine and B 1 ), calcium and magnesium?.

Each acceptance test consisted of 36 untrained consumers selected at random from the 400-member NLABS Food Acceptance Panel. Samples of both fruitcakes were rated on a nine-point hedonic scale?

CONCLUSIONS:

1. The concept of using fortified fruitcake as a single food contingency ration is sound?.

4. The fortified fruitcake developed by NLABS far exceeded NASA?s high temperature stability requirements, retaining acceptability and meeting RDA nutrient requirements throughout one year?s storage at 380C?.

6. Thermoprocessed flexibly packaged fruitcake, receiving a ?like moderately? hedonic rating at zero time, will drop one scale point to ?like slightly? after three years at 4*C and 21*C or six months at 380C. It will drop approximately two hedonic scale points to ?neither like nor dislike? after 12 months at 38*C.

The following charts illustrate the ?mean consumer acceptance ratings of fortified and unfortified fruitcake?:

?(Thanks to investigator Brenton R. Stone for bringing this to our attention.)

In a separate blog post, we will look at the experiments done immediately subsequent to the one documented here.

Ben Heck delivers holiday cheer to gamer with modded macro controller

Patrick Crowley
Benjamin J. Heckendorn is no stranger to game pads designed for people with disabilities, but the macro controller he just whipped up for Patrick Crowley (pictured above) might be his most impressive accessibility hack yet. On the latest episode of his show the modding extraordinaire crafts a breakout box that allows a complex set of commands to be triggered with just the touch of a button or foot switch. The box at the heart of the project is powered by a PIC microcontroller that takes inputs from a series of modular switches (up to eight) and turns them into virtual button presses that are fed to an Xbox 360 through a standard controller. In addition to being able to swap in eight different inputs, each one can be programmed to perform a different macro. We won't ruin all of the fun -- check out the PR and full episode in the source link to watch everything from Ben Heck's holiday epiphany through the final testing.

Asian stocks bounce as fears fade over Kim's death

(AP) ? Most Asian stock markets bounced back Tuesday as fears receded of political turmoil in the region following news of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death the day before.

Investors appeared relieved that Kim's death from a heart attack had not triggered an immediate crisis over a leadership succession in the isolated nation known to be pursuing nuclear weapons.

North Korea's neighbors worry that internal political maneuvering could spill over into missile launches or other aggression, though analysts give such acts a low probability.

But gains were kept in check after Australia's central bank expressed fears of a weakening global economy.

South Korea's Kospi led regional gains, up 0.8 percent to 1,790.88 a day after tumbling 3.4 percent on news of Kim's death.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.5 percent to 8,342.17, Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 0.5 percent to 18,168.61 and the Shanghai Composite Index advanced 0.2 percent to 2,221.68.

"Yesterday we had a little bit of a scare with the North Korea situation," said Jackson Wong, a vice president at Tanrich Securities. But today, "the market actually bounced back nicely."

Wong said investors in Hong Kong and mainland China were also hopeful that policymakers in Beijing may announce measures as soon as this weekend to help bolster economic growth following recent signs of weakness.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell less than 0.1 percent to 4,058.50 after the Reserve Bank of Australia warned that Europe's sovereign debt and banking problems "would weigh heavily on economic activity" and "there was a non-trivial possibility of a sharp contraction."

Central bank "members concluded that growth in the world economy was likely to weaken over the coming year," according to minutes of a policy meeting held Dec. 6 that were released Tuesday.

Benchmarks in New Zealand and India also fell.

Trading was light in many markets ahead of the Christmas holidays.

(AP) ? Sloppy play, blown leads, a poor record at home.

It proved all too much for the last-place Montreal Canadiens, who fired coach Jacques Martin on Saturday and put assistant Randy Cunneyworth in charge for the rest of the season.

"The primary reason is the team wasn't performing as well as it should be in our minds," general manager Pierre Gauthier said at a Bell Centre news conference.

Assistant GM Larry Carriere was appointed assistant coach, his first coaching job after a long career in scouting and administration.

Martin, who preaches defense, was in his third season with the Canadiens. He is also one of the winningest coaches in NHL history.

He now gives way to Cunneyworth, a Toronto native whose lack of French was quickly noted. He is team's first unilingual English-speaking coach since Al MacNeil in 1971. On a team that symbolizes French-Canadian pride, he faces a daunting task in his bid to remove the interim tag.

"I have the utmost respect for the language here and I am very aware of how important it is to try and learn the language," Cunneyworth said after running his first practice. "Obviously I know a few words, and not all the good ones."

Montreal, which hosts New Jersey on Saturday night, is at the bottom of the Northeast Division with a 13-12-7 record. However, they are just two points out of second place in a division led by Boston.

The 59-year-old Martin has also coached the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators. Gauthier hired Martin in Ottawa. In 1996 in Ottawa, Martin inherited Cunneyworth as his hardworking captain.

"I would hope that my coaching style was similar to the way I played," Cunneyworth said. "I felt for the most part that I competed very hard."

Cunneyworth joined his former coach's staff as an assistant this summer after spending the previous season as head coach of Montreal's AHL affiliate in Hamilton.

"I have mixed emotions this time around," said Cunneyworth, who began and ended his career with Buffalo and also played for Pittsburgh, Winnipeg, Hartford and Chicago. "There is still the excitement but my thoughts are with Jacques. ... I have the utmost respect for Jacques and everything he does, the wealth of experience that I have learned over my times with him."

Martin was in his 17th season in the NHL. He reached his 600th NHL career victory last April, making him the ninth winningest coach in league history.

The Canadiens have been hurt by mistakes this season. They are 5-6-6 at home, often squandering third-period leads.

"Especially in the last few weeks, we didn't really know what was coming out of the box every night," Gauthier said. "And the way we were losing the leads and the way we were coaching the games wasn't very consistent, and that's what we hope to change."

There were hints of tension between Martin and Gauthier. After a poor start, Martin's closest ally, assistant Perry Pearn, was fired just before a game Oct. 26.

"We were on the same wavelength right to the end, but that doesn't mean that the team's performances were acceptable," Gauthier said.

The players were told of the coaching changes when they arrived for their morning skate.

"When we are where we are and expect to be a better team than we've been, you definitely are aware there might be changes," forward Michael Cammalleri said. "For it to be Jacques was somewhat surprising."

"We're in 11th place, that's what went wrong," he added. "I think Jacques was still trying to work on thing and improve the team. I don't think there was anyone not listening to him."

In the 50-year-old Cunneyworth, the Canadiens get a more tech-savvy coach, although one who is not expected to make major changes.

"I think the message will be to get back doing the things that the players are potentially capable of," Cunneyworth said. "We obviously have to figure out ways to get more out of our individual players. It's a responsibility of the coaching staff, but it's also a responsibility of the players themselves."

Cunneyworth was promoted to the NHL club along with assistant Randy Ladouceur after coaching in Hamilton last season.

"What system is in place doesn't matter if everyone buys in and plays the right way," defenseman Josh Gorges said. "If you only have half the guys doing what's asked of them, everything is in disarray and I think that's where we got to."

"We weren't playing together and doing the things we need to do to win," he added. "And consequently we lost games we shouldn't have lost and changes needed to be made."

Martin joined the Canadiens in 2009-10 and took them on an improbable run to the Eastern Conference finals where they lost to Philadelphia. Montreal made the playoffs the following year but was eliminated in the first round.

Martin also won the NHL coach of the year in 1998-99 and was part of Canada's gold-medal triumph at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

"The bottom line is winning games," Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill said. "We weren't winning and changes happen. I don't think it was about losing the room or anything like that."

Jailed Hezbollah commander turned over to Iraqis (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The last American prisoner in Iraq, a Hezbollah commander linked to the kidnapping deaths of four U.S. soldiers, was turned over to the Iraqi government Friday, the White House said.

U.S. officials have long feared that such a transfer would lead to Ali Mussa Daqduq's release from prison. But his case became enmeshed in both international diplomacy and the Washington political debate over how best to prosecute suspected terrorists.

Under President George W. Bush, prosecutors had planned to someday charge Daqduq in a U.S. criminal court. But those plans were scrapped after Obama took office and lawmakers began restricting the president's ability to bring terrorist suspects into the United States for trial.

Many Republicans had wanted Daqduq prosecuted before a military tribunal at the Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. The Obama administration had hoped a compromise would be to prosecute Daqduq in a first-of-its-kind military commission on U.S. soil.

But the Iraqi government would not let the United States take Daqduq out of the country for trial, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

"We have sought and received assurances that he will be tried for his crimes," Vietor said Friday.

It was not immediately clear what charges he could face. The U.S. has said he was part of a brazen raid in which four American soldiers were abducted and killed in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala in 2007.

Iraq has had a shoddy record on detainee security. Last year, just a week after the U.S. turned more than 1,000 detainees at its Camp Cropper prison over to Iraqi control, four al-Qaida-linked detainees escaped. An investigation showed that the detainees had inside help.

That had lawmakers worried that Daqduq would return to Hezbollah soon after his transfer. Shortly before the White House announcement, Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., was gathering signatures on a letter to Obama.

"Daqduq's Iranian paymasters would like nothing more than to see him transferred to Iraqi custody where they could effectively pressure for his escape or release," Kirk wrote. "We truly hope you will not let that happen."

With the war over and Iraq a sovereign country, the United States is now bound by its diplomatic agreements with Baghdad. Shuttling Daqduq out of the country without the approval of the Iraqi government would have risked damaging U.S.-Iraqi relations.

Vietor said a trial at Guantanamo Bay was never an option, either for the Iraqis or for the administration.

"The policy of this administration, because we believe it's in our national security interest, is to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, not add to the population," he said.

Two Iraqi officials, speaking under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, said Daqduq was in the custody of Iraqi judiciary authorities in Baghdad. Daqduq will stand before an Iraq investigative judge, one official said. Investigative judges decide whether there is enough evidence for a trial and recommend specific charges, somewhat like a grand jury does in the U.S. system.

Appeals court upholds rule favoring airline unions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? An appeals court has upheld an Obama administration rule change making it easier for unions to organize airline and railroad workers.

The rule approved in May by the National Mediation Board recognizes unions when a simple majority of workers who vote approve organizing. The previous rule in place for 76 years required a majority of the entire workforce to favor unionizing, meaning workers who didn't cast ballots were effectively counted as "no" votes.

The Air Transport Association, which represents most major airlines, sued to block the change. The group argues the change will lead to more labor disputes that could disrupt commerce and increase delays.

In a 2-1 decision, a panel of the federal appeals court in Washington agreed with a lower court judge that the rule is valid.
